How much should I charge per hour

How much should I charge per hour?
I am a writer, editor, photographer and graphic designer with six years experience and an English degree. I have worked in journalism, media relations and, more recently, for a research center at a major university. I am beginning to take on a freelance job with a new client. This will be my first side job and I have always been salaried for this kind of work. How do I determing how much to charge per hour for my services? I will be doing ad design for print, web design and editing, and developing print materials, such as brochures and booklets.

I'm not sure what you can get for that. My advice would be to go to a site like this: http://www.calcxml.com/do/pay03 and convert what your annual salary used to be to an hourly salary and charge something similar to that.
2 :
depends on the competition, check it out.
3 :
You were paid a certain amount per month for your previous salary, right? You will now be looking for a raise if you were looking for a new salaried job, right? Keeping this new figure in mind, break it down to an hourly rate. This should give you a figure to charge for an hour. For eg: If you feel you are worth Rs.30,000 / month. 30,000 / 26 = 1153.8 /day (considering a 6 day work week) 1153.8 / 8 = 144.2 / hour (considering 8 hours work per day) Converting to US dollars we get 144.2 / 40 = $3.6 / hour This is quite low for a foreign project but is good to get started. Once you get a name for yourself you can definitely charge much higher. The range usually goes like $5 to $30 per hour or even higher.
4 :
You can register at freelance website like http://definitivelab.com/ and start bidding for all graphic designing projects posted there. Initially bid as low as possible

There is no minimum age for freelance writing. In some cases if you need to sign a contract your parents may need to sign. There are MANY sources to sell your work. Do not let age hold you back...go for it! Here is a good starter article and starter site:
2 :
Actually, there are a few sites that insist you are at least 18 years old to write for them. Most have a cut off of 16 so you should be fine. There are a few links here that might be helpful in finding work: http://www.squidoo.com/freelance-writer-tips Also, submitting to magazines is a great idea. They pay the best and accept articles from a large demographic. Check out freelancewriting.com for a list of magazines that accept freelance submissions. Good luck

How much should I charge for designing a company logo

How much should I charge for designing a company logo?
I created a logo design from scratch for a new company and will be assisting with the new layout of his business card too and helping load the logo onto his invoicing software. I have spent about 20-25 hours on this project so far. How much should I charge him? I want to be fair, but not get taken either since I did this a freelance job and I do not have a degree.

What is the going rate for a graphic designer

What is the going rate for a graphic designer?
I am doing a freelance job for a guys starting his own business. He wants me to tell him how much it will cost him for me to do rough idea sketches to start out. then after we brainstorm with those he'll pay me for the finished product. I usually don't do this so I'm not sure what to charge him. I want to tell him what to pay me per step of the design. (note: I have to desige several versions for T-shirts, bumper stickers, signs, etc.) Thanks!

This is a toughie. It really depends. Some designers charge by the hour, but other designers who are faster and more experienced would make less money this way so they charge by the project. I've noticed on craigslist lately a lot of startup t-shirt companies are wanting to pay by the finished product only and not for your time and the developement of the product, which I think is pretty unfair to be honest. I think you should really evaluate what you feel your time and effort is worth and go that route. I know some people in the business are charging as much as $100 an hour freelancing. Sorry I couldn't give more specific help!
2 :
you should prob charge minimum wage by the hour if you or he is a new business thats what i do anyway and you can then charge for silly things like web hosting, maintenance and travel costs!
3 :
Graphic Designers get $8-100 per hour. If you're both starting out, stick to the lower end of the scale...$8-20/hr. Determine how may hours you want to invest in each phase of the project and add 30%. This will allow for anything you forgot to account for (like brainstorming). $1000 is a good starting point for a logo and I'll break it down financially for you. For instance, the company logo (usually a combination of an icon and text). Making 6 rough sketches at no more than 30-60 minutes each. So on the low end of the scale, 6 drawings at 30 mins each at $8.00 per hour + 30% the charge would be $32 + materials ($5.00) = $37. On the high end of the scale 6 drawings at 60 min each at $20 per hour + 30% the charge would be $160 + materials ($10) = $170. So your range of pay for the roughs would be $37-$170. From the 6 roughs pick 2-3 to make the comps. The comps will have more detail and some color but will not be production ready. Figure 8 hours for each comp at the hourly rate you have chosen + materials (double the previous materials cost because you are using better paper, ink and color for the comps). From the comps, pick 1 design for the final logo and you will need to make this camera ready or a digital file. Figure 40 hours at your hourly rate. For the sake of argument lets pick $10 per hour (because it's an easy number to work with). Roughs = 6 designs @ 1 hr ea @ $10 per hr = $60 + 30% = $80 + $5.00 materials = Subtotal $85 Comps = 3 designs @ 8 hr ea @ $10 per hour = $240 + 30% = $320 + $10 materials = Subtotal $330 Final = 1 design @ 40 hrs ea @ $10 per hour =$400 + 30% = $534 + $50 materials = $584 The total for one logo design from start to final (camera or digitally ready) would be $999. If you really want to do the job, be willing to negotiate the price but don't sell yourself short.

Are you talking about studio/session players in a place like LA or Nashville, or a random performer somewhere? I would think it would be next to impossible for someone to be a freelance musician outside of a major recording metropolis and not have to get a second job to pay the bills. If you're in a major orchestra (or even a smaller one) the pay is enough to live, but still less than the studio players. Look up the musicians union - you'll need to be a member if you want to get in official recording sessions in LA. Even then, you'll probably have to bus tables for a while until you can get your foot in the door. Maybe a few "blackout sessions" that are off the radar of the union (and thus illegal) but a good way to meet the regulars.

If you're an "unknown" freelancer, you probably can't live off it. But if you're known for good work and availability, you can do quite well. There's a violinist in Cleveland they call the Gigmonster, because if there's a job, she's playing it. The last time I worked with her was for a special church service on the first Saturday in June...it was the first of 4 jobs for her (rest were weddings) Last I looked AFM minimum was $120 for 3 hrs with breaks. For weddings, you charge what you can.
4 :
Most musicians cannot make enough to live off of by simply playing gigs. If you're, say, the lone talented player of your instrument in your area, you can make a good bit more money than most, but you'll still have to get a second job (and maybe even a third

Can anyone help - I'm looking for a good part time job or a way to supplement income from home

Can anyone help - I'm looking for a good part time job or a way to supplement income from home.?
I'm looking for good sites for finding part time work or supplement at-home work. Currently, I'm an editor, so anything along the lines of that - proofing, helping with resumes, small freelance writing gigs, etc. Also, I used to paint. So good sites for finding labor jobs like that. Thanks!

Hey! I work from home online. It's legitimate work. It's not a home business- it's real work! It's very rewarding! It doesn't cost you a single penny! If you're interested, please email me and I would love to tell you all about it!

If you are an accomplished typist - word processor and have recently visited your local city college or university librarian, you can apply as a "certified" graduate typist, earning between $1.50 to $2.00 per page for a master or doctoral thesis. The librarian will provide you with a sample of the typing template (i.e., margin settings, font selection, page set up, etc.) in order to complete these projects. An average weekend income is about $300-$400 for two days work. Good luck!

Hi! You should never pay anyone to have a JOB from home. If someone is offering employment and asking for money then it is a scam. However, a HOME BUSINESS is different. If you and I decided to open up our own coffee shop then there would be start up costs right? It's the same for home businesses. You work for yourself and the income potential is unlimited. Not to mention the great people you will meet and the fun you will have along the way. You have to be sure you choose something you are passionate about. You can market makeup, candles, health products, etc. I chose to help people save money on their health care. There are many many people that need medical, vision, or dental benefits. 56 million Americans do not have coverage. Even more need a dental plan. If you would like to own your own business helping people save money on health care, please listen to a 15 minute recorded overview by calling 712-432-9598.
