Freelance graphic designers

Freelance graphic designers???
When freelance designing, is it common for the designer to gather printing estimates...if so, is the hourly rate the same as the rate for the actual designing? Also, what is usually generally included on the bill for any given freelance job??

ALL the time used needs to be charged. ~

This is tough. It kind of depends on how established you are and who you're working for. It sounds like you're being contracted directly by the client? You have to work all this out when you're being contracted for the job. You can't quote a price and then come back and say oh yea the printing costs this much. The price of everything should ALWAYS be agreed on and signed off before you do any work. Your worst enemy is a surprise expense that you have to present to them. Just bill them what you agreed on. If you agreed to bill on time, then bill ontime. Don't bill them for every little receipt. Just save it for a big write off on your taxes. As a general rule of thumb Graphic Designers should be friends with every printer and printer rep they meet. They're your best friends

no offense ment at all but i highly suggest you take some grammar classes. craigslist is an excellent place to look for all kinds of work. i got my job by searching there =]

I applaud your desire to write - but writing, especially online, is not for everyone. First off, is your question a good representation of your normal style? If it is, then you might want to look into other career options and paths, because anybody who applied to write for me in the style you're employing here would go straight to the round file. I don't mean to be harsh - just honest. You need to brush up on the very basics of style and grammar. One of the best place to look for writing jobs online is Craigslist. Check the "gigs - writing" section, not just in your city, but in all the Craigslist cities. There are a lot of scam artists out there, so beware - but there are also many opportunities to work on real projects. Good luck with your writing efforts!

"If a company requires initial payment from you in order to work for them, they are not legitimate." There are a few legitimate data entry companies but are not hiring and have large waiting lists (1-2yrs). The majority of data entry jobs you seen online are scams. A real company will want you to have skills inc fast typing, may want you to know MS Excel, and will usually ask that you have high speed internet. Once in a long while you may found one online on a job website but thats rare. If you do an advanced search on yahoo, you will find previous answers, sometimes the info on these is good as the info they gave is likely to have been verified if the answer was voted as 'Best

Try giving your services for free to a friend or family member, then use them as a reference. Then, set up a booth anywhere you have likely prospects (i.e. a bridal fair) Have a drawing for something so you can get names, etc

I am applying for a job as a reporter for a local paper. Will I get it

I am applying for a job as a reporter for a local paper. Will I get it?
I applied to be a freelance writer for a local paper until they dicide whether or not they like my work. I am a great writer but I have no experience professionally yet. I am just starting out. I sent them a sample of my work. I know I will raise the ratings of the paper if they hire me. I am nervouse because this job could be the break I am looking for.

5 :
probably no
6 :
good luck, it's very tough without experience.
7 :
check out CBC. they have all sorts of opportunities
8 :
Wait. Stop before the last sentence. That's great! That's the confidence they want! Go in there with that attitude and tell them " I am a great writer but I have no experience professionally yet. I am just starting out. I [have] sent [you] a sample of my work. I know I will raise the ratings of the paper if [you] hire me." Forget the I am nervous...crap. Ooops, and spell check, spell check, spell check. (it's: decide and nervous not dicide and nervouse) Go get 'em!
9 :
Yes, you will get it..
10 :
My magic eight ball says YES.

I don't think (sorry) that they would put your right into a reporter position with no experience. They may have you do something else to build up some experience for a while first - but who knows.. they may like you and have the confidence that you will be great regardless and take a chance - which I hope for you. Either way - seel yourself.. Confidence not too cocky. Be clear about what you think you can do for them. Tell them the position would contribute to your personal and professional growth and that you are confident that you are the ideal candidate for the position. Make sure you send a thank you fax or email after you interview with them (id you do) and send a thank you letter if you get the job and even if you don't - never know if the person they hire does not work out - maybe they would call you then if you ask them to keep you on file. If you are not sure what to write (though you probably are =) just search the internet for sample letters on that topic. Make sure to proofread it over and over - don't want to apply for a writer position and then make a typo or some grammatical error in a letter to them. I would prepare a resume anyway - shows you are professional and if you have any kind of experience (school paper, college paper - something )- put it on there. Emphasize anything in a past job that may relate to something in this position - even skills like multi-tasking, organization, etc. A resume is always a must and a thank you letter sets you apart from all of the people who do not send one. Good luck!!
12 :
if you are confident that you can write well, then you certainly will succeed. believing in oneself is the key to success
13 :
As long as you are not one of those reporters who only writes what they are told to write without regard to the truth. You know, like almost every single thing out there in the mainstream media. I hope you are honest and cannot be bought. I'd hate to be wasting my time even typing to another traitor to humanity like the rest of the media. I hope you'll do a story on the TRUTH about 911 and tell your audience to look at the videos available on the Internet that prove BushCo was responsible for the attacks on 911. I hope you are NOT another liar.
14 :
You sure think highly of yourselves. I hope the paper does the same.
15 :
Good luck, I hope you do well. Confidence is everything. Motto - Fake it 'till you Make it! Anyway, if you don't get it, come to Drumheller, AB and work at the Valley Times

Anyone ever gotten a job that wasnt what they majored in at school

Anyone ever gotten a job that wasnt what they majored in at school?
I graduated with an art degree but it seems i cant find work where I am and cant afford to wait for that job to come right now. Now im getting interviews for entry marketing. seems weird and kinda upsetting that I went to school for something I love and im not even using my degree. I plan to do freelance illustration on the side but its just weird. anyone going through this and have same thoughts on this

Lots of people get jobs outside their degree to pay the bills. Don't feel bad, at least your degree is in something you can still do for fun on the side. Maybe someday you will have the opportunity to do art full time, but for now, at least you're qualified to do something that makes money!
2 :
you know, I have gotten several jobs that were outside of my degree. I went to school for Massage Therapy. Where I am originally from is Minnesota, and there you dont have to have any special license or anything to work a massage job. But when I moved to Wisconsin, everything changed, because now i have to be licensed, have liability insurance, pass the state and national tests and everything. That'll cost a bunch of money to do, like you said. So working for little piddly dead end jobs for the time being while you get everything going for your art degree to be put to use is fine. Just something to help pay the bills and get you a little more experience under your belt. Sure its not what you exactly want to do at the time being, but sometimes you have to suffer to get to where you need to be. Whether it means that you have to clean toilets or wipe peoples asses until your perfect job comes along, just bear with it. I know you can do it. Just have faith that something will come along.
