How hard is it to get a graphic design job in Denver/CO

How hard is it to get a graphic design job in Denver/CO?
I'm seriously considering going into graphic design (either print or web) I know the industry on a whole is very competitive and is flooding with new graduates every day. But what about the greater Denver area and colorado? How can i find out how many graphic artist are employed, and how many are not and just doing freelance work? How many people am I going to have to compete with? Any resources would be great!

You can find out about the creative jobs in your area or any other area at http://www.retirement2u.com/creativejobscentral.htm In addition, why not try a design contest like this http://www.contestcreative.com/news.php?extend.37 and see if you really are up to the challenge in this field. If you can win something, then you are the cream of the crop so you do not need to worry about competition much. Good luck.

I don't know about websites (the ones I checked were scams), but Writer's Market is a good source for many different types of publishers.

There are some freelancing sites on http://workfromhome-at.com/freelance.html

Graphic Designers!! Please critique my online portfolio ~ and suggestions on graphic design job hunting

Graphic Designers!! Please critique my online portfolio ~ and suggestions on graphic design job hunting?
http://www.kotographics.com I also just need to make sure everything works right. This is a site I created to show my work and also do graphic design work for small business as a side freelance job. Please feel free to browse through it and I would also appreciate constructive criticisms on my work. I just graduated with my graphic design degree, and need to find a job in the field. I have been searching, but it is very tough. Does anybody have suggestions on finding a job. Any graphic designers want to share their story? Thanks so much in advance! I do the website with my fiancé, we are both in the about us section, and each piece is identified when who designed it.

I only looked quickly, but... the second web page is cut off and very small. Hard to see what's going on there. I like the Nine West ad, but the 50% off was tracked/kerned badly and looks off. Why are you "kimberly" here and have a self portrait on your portfolio of a guy? ETA - When looking for a job, check and see if there are any openings for Production Artists. You learn TONS and develop mad skills. Basically, your job is to fix and clean up the work of the designers and make it ready for final (web, print, whatever). You can freelance on the side and keep looking while you get experience in the field.

Kimberly, First of all If you knew me you would know that i am always incredibly honest and will always tell it like it it. I come from a creative background - an art/photography degree and i have been a director of advertising and creative for a fortune 400 company, so i do have some experience in your field. I think the website looks good... i will make some small comments that could make it a bit better.. The lead in page is nicely designed - i do love a monochromatic pallet but have to say it really comes off as very bland and institutional. I would somehow add a hint of color to it.. Perhaps even those filigree swirls in the upper and lower corners.. also i think if the word Koto was in a color it would be catch your eye and literally burn the name KOTO into your memory. ( thats a GOOD thing) I would go thru the site and not list each of your names on the work - you are now ONE company and are looking for freelance work. by listing what the artists name is on each piece it does not appear unified and as professional as it could be. no need to list each of your names... either of you could have done any of the work.. sell it as a unified company. It would also make it difficult if you were hired as KOTO to do a job and they said they wanted you and NOT your fiance.. it will make you more unified. After you select an individual piece in the portfolio I would place a "back to portfolio" button there on the page - yes i know i can hit back and i know i can go to the left margin and hit portfolio again.. but a simple button would make it more direct. also on certain pages ( tapatio cliffs for example - if there could be a button that enlarges the brochure that would be great - also I HAVE been to the Tapatio Cliffs resort... i was in also in charge of convention site selection and have visted most of the hotels in the phoenix area - my ultimate favorite - at least in design - the biltmore. ;- In regards to the projects - I wouldn't define that they were jobs or school projects i would just list what they are - your not lying if you dont say more.. you have plenty of time during an oral presentation to explain that these were virtual assignments or projects for certain classes. Let people looking at the site think you did the work your not lying at all... In regards to "about us"... the pic of you guys is great.. but from a business point of view I would use a face pic of each of you individually with a small bio next to each name.. just overall sharper and more professional.. Hey listen - no offense at any of my comment the site is nice enough as it is.. In my career i have hired designers and small agencies/freelancers all the time and would look at their websites to size them up - I am just telling you the things i would look at if i were approaching your site with a business eye.... in regards to work... im sure as most industries have seen its probably a tough market.. BUT that could work for you as freelancers. I would do up a nice three page brochure with business cards and try doing some research as to who are the decision makers are at some BIG companies or corporations around you. they are always looking to save money and hiring a talented cost effective freelance group instead of a high priced agency - at least for smaller projects is a PLUS for them. IN your brochure state that you are cost effective and can deliver results with quick turnaround. Best of luck....

Freelance (or other) Writers: How did you get started

Freelance (or other) Writers: How did you get started?
What was the first writing job you had and how did you go about getting that job? I want to start, but I have nothing published as of yet, and I have no idea in which direction I should be heading first. I really would like to write novels, but I have to pay the bills and have no delusions of writing a bestseller which brings in millions. Any advice is appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Good jobs for freelance writers

Good jobs for freelance writers?
? specializing in humor and biographies No worthwhile credentials yet but have samples available to show...and I am a one-finger typist. Being that I love to write; I have become a fast one-finger typist, but still not at a rate that would impress employers.

Freelancers do not have "jobs." They are self-employed. You have to find clients in your area of specialization, or magazine articles, or whatever your specialization is. You need samples of your work for publication, and/or client references, work samples, recommendations, etc. What's your area of specialization, and what are your credentials for that?
2 :
goto sites like odesk.com or rentacoder.com. There are hundreds of projects for "writers" just bid for something that you think you might be able to do. You can also visit http://www.spotthings.com and look for freelance work for writers.
3 :
There are plenty of legit freelancing sites where you can sign up for free, create a profile, and bid for jobs across the globe. In your case, you can try to use any voice recognition or dictation software that can help you type easily. Also, you can put up your own portfolio website and put links to your work samples there, be a guest blogger, or use social media networks to help you land a freelance writing gig. The more exposure you get on a specialized writing skill, the better. Good Luck

Write your freelance articles and publish them @ http://www.ezinearticles.com ezinearticles is BIG, check this out http://www.quantcast.com/ezinearticles.com You can setup an account for free and publish your own articles. After you have some quality articles published on this site as examples for future employers I'm sure it would be much easier to get a job doing what you want. You may even find a way to make a little spare money with the articles you write =D
2 :
You can get a website, or a blog of your own. And begin building a portfolio. At the same time, you can get exposure and after a while ( week, month, year. All depends on your skill and luck) you could have a few offers, or idealisticly... have some groups bidding over you. Technically speaking you could do this all free, but everything free comes with a catch. Advertisements, limitations in size, length and frequency of posts. I enjoy building websites as a hobby, and would be willing to work in conjunction with you to provide you with blogs, forums and the such. Just check here http://ihost.roleplayrevival.com

Local newspaper would probably be your best bet. depends where you live if its a big city there could be plenty of places.
2 :
Scorch is right. You can also check with AP and see if they will use you as a stringer
3 :
You could relocate someplace interesting, like Iraq...
4 :
check online at careerbuilder.com If you try to use the salary calculater to calculate the income of a photographer, you will find job result next to it. And you can enter the city you live, which will show job offers from company in that city. careerbuilder is alson featured on msn. com good luck
5 :
You won't find a photojournalist job posted on Career Builder, Monster.com, or any of those generalized job listings. JournalismJobs.com does have jobs posted on a regular basis. You could try the National Press Photographers Association (NPPA), JournalismNext.com, Journalism.org...check out the link below. But you'll probably need at least one (most likely unpaid) internship under your belt before you're hireable. You're going to need a clip book of published images to bring with you along with a journalistic resume to interviews. Keep in mind that a lot of qualified people are going after a few choice jobs, so the competition (especially for us newbies) is fierce. Networking helps A LOT. Persistence is essential. Good luck

Can I emigrate to Canada, yet work remotely in my current job

Can I emigrate to Canada, yet work remotely in my current job?
I own my own company and also do a little freelance. I'm a designer so there's no need for me to be located in any particular place. I'm based in the UK but I cannot stand it here. I'd rather move to the US, Canada or Australia (in that order). What are my options?

You are self employed and can work remotely. You can relocate to wherever you want. You may want to consider the length of time it will take you to make the move. I know it takes on average 2 years to have your application processed to Canada. Being self employed may be a problem because Canada immigration may require you to demonstrate you have the funds to set up your own business. I think the US may be similar to Canada. You may want to consider the skilled worker program rather than the business program because of the finance requirement. Check out the canadian immigration website. http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/index.asp
