What are the best freelance sites and is this a realistic way to earn a living

What are the best freelance sites and is this a realistic way to earn a living?
I am struggling to find work on a full time basis and have started looking at other avenues for potential earning. Could anyone point out the best websites for general short term jobs. If anyone uses these websites to earn a living could they indicate how successful they are in earning a living and how they go about paying (UK) taxes etc?

how about regeristing with an agency. Angency work can cover all sorts and they find you temp jobs and keep you on the records. Freelance work is for more specialist areas, so for instance you could be a freelance photographer or lighting designer. If you went with an agency they would employ you and thereofre they would sort out all your taxes. however if you were a freelancer you would have to do all you own tax returns and declare yourself as self employed. A quick search on google found this http://www.jobs1.co.uk/ maybe you want to have a further search

Hi , One my partner is in UK. He too struggle with similar situation some 3 years back. Now he got settled himself as a freelancer. So entering into freelance network is quite easy but getting jobs and working needs some hard work and patience. My view on freelancing site. http://www.guru.com - big site - suitable for big players. http://www.greatlance.com - avg one You can get all small type of projects and big too. Its good to start career. This is the 2 sites i use for my business. But make sure you pay some hard work on this area. Its sure you will get some good results. Tax issue: Now days : Freelancer are forced to pay tax. But as for as i know we have not paid any tax as of now. Since at initial stage we don't have enough money to cross the tax paying border. Its always good to meet auditor to get enough info

Do freelance workers get paid

Do freelance workers get paid?
I was offered a job and it is freelance, will i get paid?

If you mean a regular weekly paycheck, then no. Essentially you get paid for the work you submit and they accept.
2 :
Freelance workers work for themself (as far as I know). so yes, you will get paid, if you are able to attract paying customers, however If you are unsuccessful at attracting customers, you will not get paid at all.
3 :
By working as a freelancer, you are establishing yourself as a self-employed person without a long-term commitment to any particular employer. You did not state what type of work you would be doing on a freelance basis. Many writers, photographers, marketers, and independent contractors work on a freelance basis, selling their writings, photographs, marketing skills, etc. to various different types of companies and/or publications. I would be more able to give you a specific response if you were to state what type of freelance work you would be doing. It should be noted that, as a freelancer, you are responsible for paying your own withholding taxes, unemployment insurance contributions, social security contributions, etc. You are NOT an employee...you are, instead, an independent contractor. Will you get paid? It all depends on the agreement you have with the individual who offered you the "job". As a freelancer, it is highly recommended that you enter into a WRITTEN contract with whoever you are freelancing for to assure that payment is received and that all specifications and requirements of the freelance assignments are covered.
4 :
u will get paid as long as they have job for u. when they do not need u - u re gone. this is the difference of freelance and regular job- at regular job u just sit there and get paid. also u have paid holidays and sick days. when u re freelance - no ill days, no paid vacations

I don't know where you are from, but here in NY there is a Goodwill program that evaluates and then places disabled people at jobs that they can succeed at that they could handle. For your brother, it could be a low stress part time job with a mentor or social worker that can both support him and advocate for him on days when he needs to miss work. CHeck woth local social service agencies for starters. Hope your brother feels better.

How do I pay tax for a part time translation job

How do I pay tax for a part time translation job!?
I have a part-time translation job (freelance) and made about $3,500. I just received a check but nothing is deducted like federal tax or state tax etc. How do I pay tax from those income? Full time job, taxes are already deducted on the check and they give me W2 in the end of the year, so I just take it to the H&R etc. All I know I have to claim this income in the end of this year but what else I have to do? Sorry I am new with the side job and I am not familiar with tax situation in U.S. I'd be glad if anybody does translation job as a part-time and give me advices about tax. Thanks.

You'll file a Form 1040 return and show the self-employment income on Schedule C along with any legitimate business expenses. If the net is over $400 then you must attach Schedule SE to figure the self-employment tax. The SE tax is calculated at roughly 14.1% of the net profit. Any income tax will depend upon your total income. If you're in a 15% bracket (pretty typical) then you'll need to set aside 30% of the net for taxes. Ideally you should make an estimated tax payment using Form 1040-ES http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f1040es.pdf by Sept 15th. If you have no other SE income for the year the one payment will be sufficient.
2 :
If you're going to Block, take along the 1099-misc the company should send you, or your records of what you made if they don't send you a 1099. Also take your records of any associated expenses you had. Your freelance income will go on a schedule C, and you'll also use a schedule SE. The numbers from the two schedules will go on a form 1040 (not EZ or A) along with the info from your W-2.
3 :
The tax laws do not distinguish between part-time and full-time work. They do distinguish between work as an "employee" and work as an "independent contractor". Your full time job (but not all full time jobs) are work as an employee. Your part time work (but not all part time work) is work as an independent contractor. Income from work as an independent contractor must be reported as "business income" on either Schedule C or Schedule C-EZ. In most cases, self-employment tax must be paid in addition to ordinary income tax. H&R Block can figure out the amount of tax when you go to them. You must keep track of the amount of money that you receive. You should receive a 1099-MISC that you can bring to H&R Block; if you do not receive it, then you must use your own records to document how much you made. Also, you must send an "estimated" amount of tax money to the government, rather than waiting until it is time to file. Download Form 1040-ES from http://www.irs.gov and use it to calculate how much to send.
4 :
Firstly you should go to IRS.GOV and get a free Pub 17 for lots of "show & tell" intel on your tax setup. For tax year 2009 you will have to file a form 1040 and include your self employment income on a Sch C; with a Sch SE for your FICA/MEDICARE tax. On the Sch C you put your gross income of $ 3,500; then under expenses put down any expenses relating to this self employment income; mileage at rate of 55 cents a mile, to and from job, cabs, parking fees, cell phone, notebooks, office supples, continuing education or training, business meals while away from home working, lodging, read up on this in the Pub 17. You may have grossed 3.5K but the bottom line may even be a loss depending on your expenses. Good luck

I have an English Literature degree from Zayed U. I'm a 20-something Emirati woman. What job should I get?
It should be home-based, too. Ideally, the job would entail writing columns for a magazine/newspaper, writing fiction or poetry. It can be freelance or contract-based, it doesn't matter to me. I'm really in a slump because I spent five years at Zayed University and now I really want to write but don't know where to start, who to turn to. What publications pay the best? Should I write in English or Arabic? I need help!

You can get in touch with the leading English as well as Arabic newspapers mainly Gulf News, Khaleej Times, Gulf Today and in Arabic Al-Khaleej, Al Bayan, Al Ittehad by mail or in person. Meet the guy/woman who is in charge of Opinion or edit pages or any of their magazine in charge, show him/her what you plan to write about and if possible what you have written in the past. if you have this strong urge to write, you must not let this thing die out. You can contribute to any of the papers mentioned above by sending them your coverage of any event like fashion show, food festival or any other happenings in the city or story etc. Tell you something, until and unless you are a top-notch writer, you are not paid well for your contribution. There is just this big satisfaction that your name has appeared along with your column or you felt satisfied in putting your message across. For further information and possible discussion you can get in touch with me by e-mail. All the best
