i'm a recent graduate from the field of graphic design. i've just got my first freelance job to design a company logo to feature on beauty products. how much should i charge?

Hey, I've been in your same situation... It depends a lot on your skill, and the process you will go through to design the logo. If you are following professional procedure and coming up with logo comps, then developing a few, and having them pick and finalize one you can charge more than if you just draw up a logo, make it vector and send it over. If you're good and going to go all out making a strong, brand-able logo for their company you can charge as much as $500 or more. Since you are fresh to the field you may want to charge $350-400. If this is a quick job and they don't care much for branding or following procedure, you're probably looking at anything between $80-200 depending on how much you value your own work. Never listen to the "This will be good for your resume, so do it for us cheap!" line. Some good reading for freelance information is freelanceswitch.com (and no, I am not associated with them). It's in my RSS reader and I've found it to be a very valuable resource when trying to figure out what to charge or how to handle different types of clients. Good luck! Never undervalue your work.

The above answer gives good advice on pricing. Something else I might add is....to the best of your ability...try to avoid designing using PMS colors. Being in the printing industry I get alot of stuff in which looks real pretty, and they use PMS colors. All this does is increase the printing cost to your client every time they have to print letterhead, business cards etc. It can nearly double the cost simply because to the exact PMS color ink has to be used. This means the press has to be completely cleaned first....and printers don't do all this pain in the butt work for free haha. sometimes you may get a custoimer that wansts a particular unique color....advise them against it...no one else on the planet will ever know what exact color they use. CYMK can produce a very near shade of any PMS color. It just isnt worth the cost. good luck and good fortune
