I have a large chunk of freelance income for 2008, earned from 3 different agencies, all onsite at their offices. (They sent 1099's). On Schedule C... Can I expense anything at all for ONSITE freelance jobs? None of the work was done from home. Only things I can come up with are possibly meals (for myself) and transportation, but I can't tell if I'm eligible to deduct those... All the jobs were in the same metro area as I live and I took public transportation to all of them. Thanks, and help!

I do not think that you can expense anything for these. Unless your business is based in your home, travel costs to the agencies will be regarded as commuting costs and hence are not deductible. As for meals, since you have to eat anyway, these will not be deductible either.

Dear chi: Meals don't cut it, transportation is N/G. As a free lance designer you may deduct any professional license, subscription to work related journals, any specific tools, uniform if required, a log to keep track of clients, gifts to clients (with restrictions), possibly meals with clients, entrainment for clients etc. Read the Sch C instructions to see if any thing pops out at you. As a designer do you attend any conferences, conventions, any continuing education that applies to your job?? You are not eligible to deduct the meals. Meal and food deductions are allowed only for business meetings and for travel outside the metro area. You are not allowed to deduct transportation from home to a work site or from a work site to home. Those expenses are commuting, which you are not allowed to deduct. If you used public transportation to travel from one work site to another work site (without going home in between), then you can deduct the bus or train fare
