I have just been asked to be the creative director for a magazine

I have just been asked to be the creative director for a magazine?
I have designed brochures, ect.. but never a magazine. Can anyone out there tell me what software I would need, what book I could read, anything that could help me. Also, I am supposed to give them a proposal to my fees, since this is a freelance job, but one that will last forever. I live in Kentucky, and do not know how much to charge the company for a quarterly magazine. Somebody help me.

InDesign, definately. That's why it exists and all it does. I don't know what to charge, work out your time per hour and start there. Flat fees maybe really bad in this situation until you know how fast you can work.

Based on the basic level of the questions you're asking I'd say that the magazine that's hiring you is either: - planning to take advantage of your inexperience - or they are inexperienced themselves Regarding your question about software: It's a matter of workflow. Like Atom74 said, Adobe InDesign is almost certainly the layout software you should use, and other applications in the Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, Acrobat) would be necessary for other aspects of creative development. But there are obviously many more parts to the workflow for a magazine (pre-production, ad stripping, pre-press, proofing, printing), and so you'd need to talk to the production manager, print manager, editor and publisher to make sure they can handle the files you'd create. Unlike a brochure, a magazine is something continuous and ongoing. The better you organize and optimize your processes, the better the output will be. Keep in mind that whatever software you use will also have to be used by everyone else on your creative and production teams (CS1 vs CS2 vs CS3). The Adobe site itself is a great resource for whitepaper pdfs that discuss a lot of these work planning issues. Regarding your question about money: A freelance position that "lasts forever" is worth discussing with your tax person -- I know that the IRS has certain restrictions governing independent contractors (if you work for one client at the exclusion of all others, then you might not actually qualify to be a contractor and your employer may be liable for your payroll). As for your pay rate: it depends completely on what you negotiate with your employer. And it also depends on your responsibilities and how much you want the job! You might want to check the Graphic Artists Guild Pricing and Ethical Guidelines Handbook. My ancient copy from 2001 shows that the national average annual salary for a "creative director" was $53,127. Where I live (San Francisco) you can earn that sitting on your butt in a mid-level production studio, but things may be different in Kentucky. The same guidelines discuss pricing for just designing the format of a publication. It breaks it down by whether you are starting from scratch, redesigning an existing pub, executing within an existing design -- also whether the pub is consumer or trade, general interest or special interest -- and what the total circulation is. The prices (from 2001) for project-based one time design of the publication ranges from $5,000 to $100,000 (!), so I suggest you pick up a copy of the most-current guidelines. Also, no matter what all the details are, I think you need to just think for yourself what you ought to be paid. If i were you, I'd probably take the rate I'm already making now, and increase it by at least 20%. Don't get suckered into working for cheap! It aint worth it

Where could I go to get pictures cleaned up to post online

Where could I go to get pictures cleaned up to post online?
We have a very small company and take pictures of some of our products. Right now we are pretty small and aren't at a point where we can hire a professional photographer to take product photos, so we take pictures ourselves with our digital camara. We have used Photoshop ourselves to clean up the photos in order to post online, but we are not Photoshop experts and it takes us hours to clean up one photo. I'm sure some who knows what they are doing could clean a photo up in a fraction of the time. Where is a good place to find someone who could do a very small freelance job cleaning up photos?

Post job listings on Craigslist or at your local college/design school.

You'd be better off spending that money on someone to take decent photos to start with. If it takes you hours to clean up a photo, you're doing something horribly wrong when shooting it

What does it mean when a potential employer says "Thanks Suzy, I will be in touch

What does it mean when a potential employer says "Thanks Suzy, I will be in touch?
I am trying to get a freelance job and after emailing the guy the particulars, he said the above. I am wondering if that means Nahh, you are too expensive.

he might actually do what he says or he may fire yiu. No offense towards you.
2 :
it means "dont call me, i'll call you" but he might actually call, so dont rule it out completely.
3 :
polite way say you dont have the job or maybe sexual harrassment is around the corner
4 :
Who knows? Job interviews are such a puzzle... Sometimes you feel you got it, and deception, not a call back in days, or months. Other times you think you're screwed, and next day the guy calls, unexpectedly! So, who knows? Don't take it so personal, if you don't get the call you expected, send another resume, contact some other company. Eventually you'll reach your goal. Persist..
5 :
It is only 25% chance that he will call you back later after ascertaining other applicants for the position. It does mean that your qualifications / experiences donot meet 100% of his requirements. If it does, he would say something else or fix the time for interview to hold on to you.
6 :
He may be reviewing other potential candidates for the job. Or perhaps he won't be able to review your info in depth until later. Or it could be the big brush-off. I'd wait a few days - since 'be in touch' is totally vague - you could email him again and simply say "Hi Mr. XXXX, I just wanted to check in with you - please let me know if you have any questions or concerns, and I'll be happy to address them". That's a good entre to refresh the issue with him, without seeming demanding.
7 :
Think positive. Smile and thank him for his time. He probably will call you in a day or two.
8 :
You may or may not have a job. He may have more applicants to interview.
9 :
he'll call if he needs you!!! Chill
10 :
No interview or conversation, you sent an email, he replied, "Thanks, I'll be in touch."? If this is the case, I'd thank him for considering your qualifications and ask if you can schedule a meeting - if it's a contract job I don't think you can treat it like a regular interview situation.
11 :
don't wait up chances are they just say that to get people off their backs.
12 :
It means "Thanks Suzy, I will be in touch." Don't over analyze. ;) And, if you think you're too expensive.. re-evaluate your prices. You could be

Craigslist... also hit up marketing and publishing company websites. My company hires LOTS of freelancers just based on craigslist ads.
2 :
Freelance switch has a good job board. http://jobs.freelanceswitch.com/ Craigslist is OK, but the people willing to hire are usually cheapskates.
3 :
You can try to bid on jobs in places like rentacoder.com, elance.com and guru.com. Frankly, I avoid all of em though. They are plagued with people who do not know the value of work. You will see jobs such as "FACE BOOK CLONE NEEDED BY FRIDAY", listed for 250 dollars...you couldn't get a qualified web developer to work for 250 dollars per HOUR let alone the entire job. The people who go there are a bit clueless...most have business plans that look like this: 1. Hire web designer 2. ... 3. Profit! Anyhow... All is not lost. There are some GREAT ways you can still make money using the web to find jobs. 99Designs.com is one of my favorites. It is competitive, but you can keep entering the same design until it sells. Basically, this kind of site let's you design however you want, then sell it to someone who likes the style...rather than listen to someone tell you what they want...when they actually have no clue and will change what they want 600 times before you get the first prototype done. Check out this link for a ton of options: http://mashable.com/2009/02/28/sell-designs-online

telemarketing- you can have a job by the end of the day.

See if there's a place called Command Labor or Command Center in your area. A friend of mine used to work there in the summers (she's a teacher) and she got to pick which days she would work. You can tell them you'll work anything from construction to clerical, depending on your skills. And she got a check each day at the end of the day.

Wal~Mart, they hire everybody, but it's like working for nazi's

I made over $200 last month just doing free surveys. You'll never be asked to pay for anything! The minimum payout is only $15, so that means you only have to earn $12 in order to receive a check. The site pays out monthly! Hope this helps some :)
