what does freelance work mean


what does freelance work mean?
i've been offered a designing job by an employer. i asked for details of the job and he said it was freelance. my understanding of the word is still vague. where and when do i do my work? do i have to go to the office? i am a student and im afraid it might clash with my schedule. pls help.
