Should I apply for a job at a startup company

Should I apply for a job at a startup company?
What are the risks involved? I saw a contract job at a startup Internet company. The company was started by another respected company who has had many successful Internet startups that are thriving today by themselves (and are well known sites). The job title requires a college degree. However, the job description lists only basic requirements and doesn't list a college degree. I am mid-career, college-degreed, and I could count this job as part of my freelance business. The job is a contract job, work at home, flexible to one's own schedule, based on how productive you are. The more you produce the more money you'll make, to sum up what the job posting says. Pay is silly, a tiny fixed amount for one item produced. I see this job as skill enhancing, extra though small $. But since it doesn't even list a college degree I wonder if it's really is skill enhancing. If I do have a degree, will they pay more? Is this job for a recent grad? The ad doesn't say so. Am I foolish to apply?

The biggest risk is the company doesn't make enough money to pay you. If the upside is good, take a chance.
2 :
Foolish would be to not look into it further if youare interested in it. You say they have had other companies that have done well If you are in a position to try it out, do it. Make sure that you are secure and stable in all your other areas but it sound like something you really want to check out go for it. the worse tha tcould happen you find out it is not for you , the best it happens to be great and you end up with a GREAT new job
3 :
Can you check the company out with the BBB first? Type the company name in to your search engine and see what comes up. A little research can go a long way and save you a lot of wasted time. Alicia

Any freelance graphic artists

Any freelance graphic artists?
How much do you make on average per year? And what does your job consist of?

best place to probably ask is on http://www.deviantart.com lots of graphic artists on there.
2 :
Annual income averages are HARD to estimate for freelancers, because it depends on how many clients and projects are done. I have had great years with six digit income and many, many more where I didn't make 30 grand. Anyone thinking about going the full-time freelance route had better understand that it is as much a SALES job as it is a design career. I don't just sit around at my computor or drawing board while projects come my way, one right after another. I do twice annual marketing campaigns with postcards, mini portfolio mailings and a LOT of door to door cold calls. While I depend on a lot of repeat business and word of mouth referrals, the way to business growth is in bringing in NEW clients. My clients ask for everything from flyers for door to door distribution, newspaper ads and layouts, to magazine and comic book layouts, invitations, brochures, business cards, post cards, greeting cards, airbrush tee shirts, cartooning for special events, coloring books, educational curriculum layouts, photo editing, portraits, art lessons and anything else that comes my way, including technical writing, transcribing and, baby-sitting if I am really desparate.

What steps can I take to become an animal rescue cop or something? I want to be involved and help animals?
I graduated for something completely different- animation.. But I really love animals. I can do freelance for my other job, but I'd love to be an animal rescue person.. What steps should I take to do this? I want to help animals, and I think a rescue person would be great.. What does it entail?

The best way to figure this out would be to contact your local SPCA. I'm sure they would be grateful to have your help.
2 :
well, the best thing to do is volunteer at an animal shelter or rescue&find out if you really are cut out for it.You will need to do all the jobs at the shelter both dirty&grungy;&fun andheart-rending.Ask if you can job shadow w/your local rescue official,and/or canine police officers,as well as ask them as many questions as you can.And you can go online&find out the education requirements, and checkw/your local schools.I hope this works for you,and good luck!
3 :
watch the animal rescue shows on animal planet and go to their website...also, look for animal shelters in your area and see if you could help out!! you would be a great animal life saver!!

If you're new to all of the above I'd recommend enrolling in a desktop publishing course so you learn the basics and as an added benefit you will be able to use your course work as a starting point for your portfolio. You will need to buy the software, I'd recommend starting with the Design Standard bundle from Adobe which includes Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign and Acrobat. InDesign does much the same job as Quark, ie both are page layout programs. You can add Quark later if you need to but the Adobe bundle will give you all the tools you need. Once you've learnt the basics and have the software you can experiment and continue to teach yourself with the help of online tutorials, help files and books

There's a lot of tutorials on YouTube, that's how most people I know learned. There's probably websights that teach you too.
2 :
If you do not own the software you cannot possibly learn them, no matter how many videos you watch. You can download the software for trial periods, but you will need to buy them in order to do any freelance work (and they cost a fair amount) you could buy secondhand copies from ebay but, as a freelancer, there is a good chance you will be sent files to work with/from, if you cannot open them you will be sunk. Even with intensive online learning, I would guess that you are looking at several months before you reach a good standard (several weeks before you are competent), you would also need to know about production processes to produce artwork that will satisfy printer and client.

how does one go about becoming a freelance writer on the web

how does one go about becoming a freelance writer on the web? ?
I have pretty good writing skills and I need an additional source of income, but I dont have the time to get yet another job. People have told me that you can write on the web and make a decent amount, but I dont know where to start. Also, my specialty is in the sciences, so if anyone knows about science writing, that would be appreciated. Thanks

Hi Borshu, You can either start writing yourself by starting your own blog about some topic you like. You can look for free blogging websites or create a blog of your own by using wordpress. You would as well need a hosting and domain for your own blog. You can probably get hold of a good one at http://www.sonnexh.com. Next, you can monetize these using Adsense or by placing advertisements from advertisers. But this will be a long process to get money. If you do not want to earn money son, you can look for writing jobs on offer and write for webmasters. You can find good writing jobs at http://www.freelance-projects.info/ Specifically for you, look fro categories like CopyWriting, Translation, Writing. http://www.freelance-projects.info/category/copywriting/ http://www.freelance-projects.info/category/translation/ http://www.freelance-projects.info/category/writing/ Best of Luck

planning on moving to montreal.. but may be lacking job experience?
I am considering moving to Montreal in the next year or so.. my problem is that most of my job experience doesn't qualify me for the job classifications Quebec is looking for regarding immigrants. I've worked retail jobs and have been doing freelance art (on the side) for about 6 years. I know I can make a living there, but my major obstacle is that I don't seem to fit into their job catagories anywhere. If anyone has any knowledge on this I'd greatly appreciate it! I know it's a bit of a complex issue.

You will need to learn French because most jobs require it especially retail jobs.

I agree with Martin. It'll be really hard for you to find a retail job if you don't speak French. All the jobs I've seen posted up on job sites require bilinguilism. Although if you're lucky you can find some that require primarily English, but I usually find that once in a blue moon. You said you've done some freelance art right? I'm guessing that's graphic design related. If so, then here's what my brother's friend posted up recently: A) FULL TIME GRAPHIC & WEB DESIGNER WANTED (TO START END OF MAY) Maximus Telecom / Ivorcom.com / von1.com and more... Charging a Web/ Print graphic design job

How to charge a Web/ Print (Freelance) graphic design job? By hours or by projects. Sometimes, it's hard to justify and so often, I will under charge my clients.

When running any type of business, it is important to factor in all of your costs into your pricing. Once you have your costs figured out, you move into how much you want to profit. Some things your cost goes into paying: -Legal Fees -Business Insurance -Supplies/Materials -Office Expenses -Accounting Fees -Software/Hardware -Etc Most small business or self-employed people fail because they don't take the time to do a cost-analysis. It will require a huge investment of time beyond reading this post as well! Charging per hour: Allows more flexibility, but clients tend to ask you why it took you X amount of time. Charging per project: Have to stick to the standard procedures, clients may feel you did too many unnecessary things. Try heading to the www.sba.gov for more small business owner tips! p.s. Make sure you create an LLC or something to protect yourself legally!
2 :
There is no standard. It's like would you pay for Prada shoes or Payless shoes while they are both shoes. I would go for job instead of charging per hour. Look at the complexity of the web site and figure out how long it takes you to complete, suggest a price. Usually a site needs 2-3 months to complete, but mostly likely this won't be your only job during that period. If the site does not require a lot of flash or java script or adding merchant account, I think $1500-$2000 is fair enough. If the site is real simple and it only takes 1 week to finish; like a personal information web site, $500 is reasonable. Again, it'll all your call, if you think you're the genius, ask for higher. Good luck!

hi i am also a freelance web and graphic designer. so far the projects that i am accepting are business card, brochure, invitation, tarpaulin....since i don't have machine to print i ask quotation to those company printer who have cheap prices then i just add 40% to be my income. gets? i am the one who design but im not the one who print it. if they only requiring you for a design, give them charge...are in the philippines? for example in logo, chrage him/her 300 to 1000 depending on the person who needs it. if they are only students, then give them cheap prices but if they are an organization or company charge them the amount which is worth in your effort. in web design, for static website means no "programming" i only charge 8,000 to 15,000 depending on the page no. of website. and 20,0000 to 60,000 on dynamic depending on the requirements of the clients. as a freelance, it depends on you on how you can rate your deigns and projcts. the important is the effort you give is worth on the prices they give

It is more of a cotton industry business. Create a web page, do some seminars, post ads at colleges and so on. You have to find people who want you to write their resume.
2 :
Given the kind of service you want to provide and advertise, it would help if you start spelling correctly. If you are looking for a steadier income stream, market your skills to schools. Go to technical schools, colleges etc in your area and offer free resume writing seminar. If you are good with your presentation, you might get some clients. Create a professional web site; advertise and cross link to related sites. Post your profile on online professional networks and freelance professional sites, i.e. LinkedIn or Guru.com Attend local professional association chapters meetings. Many people who go to these meetings are networking for career advancement, so they could be your potential clients. Obtain professional resume writing accreditation to increase your credibility and broaden your own professional network. Best wishes.

If you want to make money online and wanted to work from home, go for freelancing jobs. They are only one, that will pay you and its free to become a freelancer. The Internet has opened up many freelance opportunities, expanding markets and helping to build it into one of the largest economic segments for many economies. You dont need to pay to get the job. Development for freelancing has been especially high for software development, website design, information technology, and business documentation. Freelance practice varies greatly. Some require clients to sign written contracts<!--while others may perform work based on verbal agreements, perhaps enforceable through the very nature of the work. Some freelancers may provide written estimates of work and request deposits from clients. Get more information on the website. You can almost find any freelance job you want. http://freelancejobs.awardspace.com/ Payment for freelance work also varies greatly. Freelancers may charge by the day or hour, or on a per-project basis. Instead of a flat rate or fee, some consultants have adopted a value-based pricing method-->based on the perceived value of the results to the client. By custom, payment arrangements may be upfront, percentage upfront, or upon completion. For more complex projects, a contract may set a payment schedule based on milestones or outcomes

Ditto-it's hard everywhere...especially in bigger cities, you're going to have more competition. You go out a bit more rural, and the pay sucks or there's not as many opportunities. Just can't win...Good luck finding something!

You have to realize, especially in a big city, that bachelor degrees are a dime a dozen. They're the equivalent to a high school degree 50 years ago. If you want a job with just a bachelors degree, you have to either lower your expectations (meaning, don't expect a job that's all that high paying), or pick a specific major that has demand (versus most liberal arts degrees

Should I include my three years at Cistercian and Benedictine monastery in my CV

Should I include my three years at Cistercian and Benedictine monastery in my CV?
At present I am covering the time with freelance jobs I did during the time and before. Still, the time looks a bit 'thin' on the CV, and with employers who do security scans (I am in finance) there is the awkward moment of having to 'confess'. People who advised me to hide the time from my CV said that it may be understood as hinting at a fickle character while others said it might be 'fascinating'. Doesanybody also know a better forum to ask this question?
Other - Careers & Employment - 4 Answers

1 :
I have always found that your CV needs to be as accurate as possible. It will be far more troubling to explain the absence of this time than to discuss with a potential employer your motives for going to monasteries. Leaving it out suggests that you are trying to hide something. Not a good trait, especially in finance.
2 :
You'll probably get as many opinions on this as you get answers. My advice is not to hide the time but to use the reference to build your character as solid, reliable, pious, honest, etc...the virtues associated with monks. Do this for the same reason you add charitable, non-profit work on your CV. It gives you more experience to draw from and you can turn any of it to advantage in an interview. Most employers also require you to complete their own "application" in addition to submitting your CV or resume. They specifically require you to account for all your time and to explain "gaps" such as periods of unemployment, etc. Your time in the monastery will need to be mentioned there, so do it on the CV and save yourself the trouble of having to invent an explanation on the fly.
3 :
Yes, of course. There is nothing wrong with staying in a monastery. In fact, it could be a plus for you. Just have good reasons why your monastery stay was good for your self-development, etc. Peace and blessings!
4 :
Absolutely! A CV is only good for one thing and that is to get a job interview. Whenever I am going over CV's and candidates for a position I am looking for people who stand out, and this is just the type of experience which may lead to your next job. While some employers may not respect your time at the monastery, these are probably employers that you wouldn't feel comfortable work for as an employee. I work in the finance field and the best thing I ever put on my CV was the eight months I spent working in the Alaskan fishing fleet. It has proven memorable and a great talking point, just what you want on your CV. Good Luck

Any starting point, when you have all the finacila angles setup, would be advertising, product. Explaining in plain words what it is that you are selling thorough your advertisments. If it is only the Painting, of scketching type of a thing, then holding exhbitions in key places, even if you get a small corner. It be seen. Painting is not someing to be sold as word of mouth, it has to be seen and experienced as Art is the tradition of expression. Some may like it some may not. Good presentation (frames, light, colors of the walls etc.) is the only way people will look at it with interest. Art today is pretty much one of the good ways of investing money. Freelance is a good starting point, if you can.
2 :
You succeed in the arts, on any level, by networking. That means, you pursue every venue as aggressively (but nicely) as possible. If your friend has an MFA he should definitely go for a teaching job. He should have samples to submit to publishers, but he should also exhibit. If he doesn't have a gallery now, (any gallery) he should trek around to libraries and anywhere that shows local artists with some pieces made for display. If he's into science fiction or comics he should do pieces he can rent space at conventions to show (most of the conventions I've been to had art shows and most of the pros in either field I've known used the art shows as much as they did submitting samples to publishers. Turning up your nose at any opportunity to get your work out is really a case of lost money. There is an old man I knew briefly in the seventies whose New York Gallery is pushing his work very aggressively -- and while he's a wildlife artist the bulk of his income always came from illustration. But obviously, he's also shown his work.
3 :
Tell him to send resume or copy of school transcripts and desired salary, and examples of his work to: U2rArt-owner@yahoogroups.com

Am I legally owed a staff job

Am I legally owed a staff job?
I've been working at the same place as a freelance worker for over a year now. I work 40 or more hours a week and I don't ever take vacation unless I have to because the building is closed. A co-worker recently told me that this is illegal on the part of my employer and I am supposed to be given a staff position. Is this correct?
Law & Legal - 5 Answers

1 :
It depends on what your job is. Go to the irs.gov website and look at the information on employees vs. independent contractors. If you still can't figure out which one you are supposed to be, then the IRS will do it for you if you request it.
2 :
if you are NOT working thru a temp agency and the company themselves has been paying you directly as a contract employee for a year, then it's possible they could be exceeding some kind of length of employment rules - might vary by state - talk to them. The longest I ever worked at one job assignment as a temp was about 11 months, but that was thru an agency and the client then hired me - been there 6 yrs now as a perm employee
3 :
This only applies in the United States. There are no laws where any employer has to make a freelance worker a permanent staff member after any amount of time. The only illegality would be is in the event you are being treated as a staff member with set hours and rules and they would then be in violation of the Federal Labor Standards Act.
4 :
Uh, you aren't owed a job. Depending on your job duties and conditions, though, it might or might not be legal for them to define you as a freelancer, they might have to classify you as an employee if they keep you at all, but they don't have to keep you.
5 :
ask that co-worker where they got their information, if they know of someone who advanced like that and if so go talk with that person. Sometimes co-workers like to start trouble and what they told you may not be accurate, or not accurate in tough economic times like right now. Why not ask your supervisor what the rules are

What kind of civil? Roads, site grading, etc??? If you are a PE, do some cold calling of construction firms. Many states require utility placement permits be signed by a PE and you can make a fair $ laying out and signing off on those - you typically need to do field measurements, though. Good drafters are hard to find, call some civil firms and see if they need anyone to take up some freelance work

But as you do not have a good knowledge in computer and don't need to do any higher level job, then you should try to learn something first before try to do freelancing jobs. Has anyone been scammed by a "Joe Appleton" of "Appleton Consulting" job post on Freelanceswitch

Has anyone been scammed by a "Joe Appleton" of "Appleton Consulting" job post on Freelanceswitch?
Just wondering. Freelanceswitch is a great site. But there are some bad 'apples' posing as fake companies, posting freelance design jobs on Freelanceswitch. Terms and payment is agreed upon and a contract is signed. Only to find the contract is later breached and a freelancer is scammed out of promised pay once work is completed and submitted. Has anyone had a similar experience? It sucks to be expecting and waiting for money (you worked hard for) only to find you may never get paid. Freelanceswitch (a great site) should make better efforts to screen and scrutinize subscribers. I think the actual contact information of job posters and freelancers should be verified (phone numbers, emails, addresses... etc. Currently they only take emails as contact info). Sadly it may slightly takes away the ease of the site but it is necessary.

I am a computer tech that's working at a company right now, but sometimes I do freelance contract jobs. I was told for those contract jobs that as long as in that year I do not earn over $600, I do not have to report this. However, I am confused. Is it $600 per company that I work with or $600 for all companies that I work with throughout the year?

Assuming that your main job already puts you over the filing requirement, ANY additional income (even $1) must be reported. The companies aren't required to send you a 1099misc until they have paid you at least $600 but you are legally required to report all of your income.
2 :
Each employer that pays you $600 or more, should issue you a form 1099-misc. Income from all 1099-misc, should be reported as income on your tax return.
3 :
Whether or not you'd receive a 1099-MISC at the end of the year substantiating the amount of compensation ("extra income") you have received during the year, all self-employment earnings ("extra income) are reportable.
4 :
If you are paid more than 99 cents for your services then you are required to report the money SOMEWHERE, depending on what your business organization is. If you do not do the work with an intent to make a profit at it, you can just report it on Line 21 as Other Income. If you do the work with the intent of making a profit - and you are a Sole-Proprietor or a Single-Member LLC then you would report in on Line 1 of a Schedule C. If your business is organized as a multi-member LLC or you have a formal partnership then you would report the income on Form 1065. If you are a single-shareholder corporation that has elected "S-Corporation status" then you would report it on an 1120-S. Otherwise it would go on an 1120. Did you get all that? Do you understand NOW why there is a Professional Tax Preparer industry out there? G'Luck... Mike Womack, Sr. Partner Zero Degrees Tax LLP Moore, OK Lawton, OK

Job hunting out of state...HELP

Job hunting out of state...HELP?!?!?
My boyfriend and I are planning a move to Raleigh, NC in late June early July. I've been looking at jobs online since about November, and I'm not sure where to start. Do I fill out applications even though I will not be there until June/July? At the moment I work for an auction advertising company doing graphic design, although auctions/real estate is not my thing, I love the design part of it. I want to continue doing this when I move, but it seems there are no openings for anyone with out a degree. I want to go to school, but don't have the money at the moment, and I have a ton of things (brochures, postcards, ads, etc.) that can show i am qualified. So question 1) when, where, and how would you suggest starting my job hunt? question 2) I don't have a degree, should i fill out an application anyways? Any advise/suggestions on out of state moving/job hunting/freelance graphic design or anything of this nature would be greatly appreciated! Would it be beneficial to put a job wanted post on craigslist?

It's a little early to fill out an application. I would wait until about 30 days prior to the move. I hope your boyfriend has a job. I wouldn't go there without a job

How do I quit my job

How do I quit my job?
For the last 5 years I've been working with a newspaper company designing website for $35,000 a year. I also have my own business as freelance website designer that earns me 3 times Im earning with the newspaper company. I plan to quit the newspaper company and concentrate more on my business. I don't know what would be my excuse of quittijng. They don't know about my freelance work and I don't intend to tell them about it. My other alternative is to tell them someone gave me an offer I can't refuse. I want to leave the company with good intentions since i've worked with good people so I want to give an excuse that won't hurt their feelings. Any suggestions?

take the alternative
2 :
i'm confused, why do you need an excuse? You can really leave a good company "with good intentions" if you plan on LYING to them. They don't really need an excuse, they can ask but you don't have to provide that information. Honestly, I don't see what's so wrong about leaving to focus on your own business... it happens all the time in the working world. just write a letter giving your two weeks notice, and then include the information about your freelance business if you want. they could end up becoming clients of yours!
3 :
If you dont want to hurt thier feelings then no excuses. Your not breaking up with a girlfriend, this is your job and should be treated as such. If you are cool with everyone there and your job the POLITE thing to do would be to talk one on one with your boss and even offer to extend the normal two week notice period to a month.
4 :
Just say to your boss i have worked here to long already i know i know 5 years but i am getting tired of doing this so i quit, i am going to find a better job that doesnt get so boring like this one but a nicer way is say this look ( the boss's name ) i know we had good times working together but you know i am mostly here the time and i really need to get out so i am quitting i am so sorry if its bringing you doqn bu its the right thing to do! Then just walk out thats exactly what to do EXACTLY!
5 :
Do you really need an "excuse"? You have a very valid REASON: You have a better opportunity elsewhere. Give them your letter of resignation and say that you've found a position that allows you more growth and a higher income than your current position. Give them positive remarks like "While I've completely enjoyed working with you", "The staff here is extremely friendly, competant, and supportive", and be sure to thank them for the opportunities they've given you. The worst case scenario is that they'll try to up your salary to keep you. The best case scenario is that they accept it graciously and you move on.
6 :
tell them you want a career change and that you want to do something different give them a two week notice.leave on good terms.
7 :
You can tell them that you've got another opportunity, but they will probably be curious about your new job and ask questions. You could tell them that you are planning on starting your own business. Why don't you want to tell them the truth? Was there something in your contract that could cause problems if they knew about it? If not then they would probably wish you well. Honesty is always the best policy. Good luck.
8 :
You are weird. If they don't pay high then just leave. OR just tell them that you need more money to support family no, and it is time to get a job with better salary. Just tell them you need money now. Are you feel guilty of stealing company time to your your freelance work

you must attend cosmetology school first then get a business license.
2 :
NO. You don't need a licensed to become a freelance makeup artist. But mind you, every state is different and has different laws and regulations when it comes to Cosmotology. Here in California, you don't need a license to freelance, but you do need a license if you plan on working in a salon. Below is a link to the Makeup Community that I am apart of and you will learn ALOT from reading this article/forum. Hope this helps and good luck on your future freelancing career

Need a FT job that pays $32K

Need a FT job that pays $32K+?
I am seeking a full-time job that has a starting pay of at least $32-36K per year, in order to afford my rent and bills. I have a bachelor's degree in English, and specialize in writing, journalism and public relations - I also have some experience with news websites. I have also had a few part-time hospitality-style jobs ... front desk clerk at a gym, and greeter/check-in agent for a cruise line. I've applied to some local banks and hotels, but I don't think that they would offer the pay scale I'm looking for. I would absolutely take on a weekend job or freelance writing gigs to make up the difference for a job that paid high $20Ks, low $30Ks as well. For reference, I live in Northern New Jersey, about 5 miles outside of Manhattan. You obviously don't have to suggest any particular jobs, but maybe you can give me an idea of general places I should be applying to (universities, real estate agencies, etc.). I'd be grateful for any good ideas. I can't become a teacher right now, because it's only February. Plus I'm not certified (I realize I could probably go to a Catholic school) and can't afford to go back to school right now.

Unfortunately, English degrees aren't too helpful when looking for a job. My sister in law had the same problem, and she is a published writer. Good luck.
2 :
I live in Texas, and know nothing about NJ or NY, but I would strongly recommend that you begin your job search with a temporary employment agency, such as: Modis, Segue Staffing, Millenium Personnel Corp, etc, or even Yahoo's Hot Jobs website and/or Monster.com. These agencies usually do extensive testing of your skills, and the recruiters can help look at your education and experience and recommend "hot" jobs in your areas. As I don't know your location as well as you, check your local phone book for temporary staffing agencies or staffing agencies, and call a few. Anytime I've gone through a career change, this is what I've done, and sometimes the temporary jobs have led to permanent employment... other times, I've at least found a direction that I wanted to go in once meeting with staffing professionals. Hope this helps!
3 :
Why don't you become a teacher. They start at about $35,000

What is the best blogger site to use if you are looking into doing it seriously/professionally

What is the best blogger site to use if you are looking into doing it seriously/professionally?
I want to start a blog site to post some of my thoughts and short fiction, outside of just facebook and myspace. I'm hoping to take on some freelance writing jobs, and start out by posting a blog, since many companies want a link to your blog to check out your writing style. Does anyone have any recommendations?
