How do I become a freelance journalist

How do I become a freelance journalist?
I've got 5 years of Political Science and Economics under my belt. Always done very well in english classes. I'm a gifted writer. I want a job n journalism after I graduate and am also thinking of starting my own magazine. How would I go about any of this? Nice, hows the standard of living? I would think write in cafe, then report in foreign nation. Boots on ground.

Well you need to know how to use the Journalism type of programs like in-design i believe and in style or something. But it would be best to have a portfolio of your work like a blog site or if you wrote for your school paper and had something printed save that copy and build up a nice folder etc. I too am a freelance Journalist, writing about entertainment and music and I have quite the portfolio for all of my work, I've had my work in print and online and have been running my blog site since 07.
2 :
Go to the bookstore or library and get a copy of a book called "Writer's Market." It's updated every year. It lists thousands of publications that accept freelance contributions. There are also some chapters with general information about freelancing that will answer the questions you asked above, and quite a few questions that you haven't thought of yet. You'll write in Microsoft Word, more than likely. You do not need InDesign or any other program that relates to page layout. They have graphic designers who do that. For a beginner, with no track record, I might as well tell you that the standard of living will be horrible. Every publication gets more offers than it could possibly publish. They'll look for established writers who they know can be counted on to produce good, interesting, accurate work, and turn it in on time. If you try hard enough, you can get an assignment as an unpublished writer, but it's likely to be the type of assignment that you work on for 20 hours, and spend $100 of your own money, and they pay you $150 -- if they accept the finished work. Chances of landing the cover story for Readers Digest or Playboy or Time are zero, at least not when you start. Later on, as you get better and better and make more contacts among editors, you can make a good income, but of course, you won't have any health insurance, pension plan, sick days, etc. As for starting your own magazine, you better have extremely deep pockets, identify a market segment that doesn't already have a great magazine, and know some people who are willing to bust their tails selling ads. In other words, forget it, because as an individual, it's all but impossible

Where can I get paid freelance writing work

Where can I get paid freelance writing work?
I like to write, a lot. I was wondering if there was any sort of job for amateur writers in places such as local newspapers, with the articles being paid for or something. I will wrote practically anything, however! Anyone got any ideas?

Go to Craig's List. There are writing jobs posted every day. Choose the city but many writing jobs do not require you to even live nearby.
2 :
Yes, you can. Here are some freelance writing sites you might want to check out: Sites which pay upfront for articles : Constant Content A site where writers can showcase their articles with a preset price tag and have interested publishers buy them. Has strict standards for submissions (free of grammar mistakes etc) so check to make sure that you are submitting a flawless article. If you have articles that you have published elsewhere before, you can still sell them for usage rights here. DailyArticle A site where you can showcase your articles and sell full ownership rights to them. Demand Studios Offers upfront payments for articles. No passive income though and you lose your rights to your articles once they are published. Only available to US residents. Textbroker Only available to US residents. Pays on a "price per word" basis, with higher rated writers being able to command a higher price. Bright Hub Bright Hub is a science and technology content site. They're currently paying writers $10 per article, in addition to future revenue sharing. Words Of Worth At Words of Worth, you enter into a contract with them, whereby you promise to deliver 10 to 80 articles in a month, depending on the contract, and they pay you £250. Sites which let you earn passive income Bukisa Personally, I don't like Bukisa. It seems to be to be a content site that's focused on quantity and not quality. There are quite a number of peole who do recommend Bukisa though. Bukisa has a 3 tier referral system, which means that you get a cut of the earnings of the referrals of the referrals of your referrals. As far as I can tell, that's the reason most of the people are recommending it. But like I mentioned, I don't like it. They even set up a Help page which has nothing on it except "Coming Soon" and a link to their FAQ. It's now Aug 31st 2009. Bukisa was started in 2008. That's a long time to set up a Help page. *Updated on Nov 10th 2009: it has come to my attention that Bukisa no longer has a "Coming Soon" Help page with nothing on it. I wonder if my lens had anything to do with this change... Squidoo A site that lets you build your own web pages, called "lenses" on Squidoo and earn from them. Hubpages Another site that lets you build your own web pages and display your articles on them, letting you earn passive income. Triond A site where you can publish your work and earn a passive income through page views generated by your articles. One of the better paying sites for passive income. Suite101 A site where you can publish your work and earn through page views. Requires writers to publish at least 10 articles every 3 months. Shvoong A site where you can publish your work and have them earn a passive income. Helium Has a very active marketplace where publishers will request specific articles and frequent contests, both of which offer writers the opportunity to earn lump sum payments. Articles published will generate passive income. Also, each article will earn a writer $0.50 x his writng star rating(up to a maximum of 5). However, Helium does require a fair amount of commitment from you each month, requiring writers to maintain at least one rating star to be eligible to earn. Associated Content Has contests every now and then, and specific article requests every now and then, so writers have a chance to earn lump sum payments. Also offers upfront payment for articles, but this is restricted to certain topics and only available to US citizens. Articles published will generate passive income. Qondio Qondio is an interesting site. While it does allow you to earn Adsense revenue on your articles, the focus on Qondio seems to be to let you build backlinks. Every piece of intel that you submit has a backlink to the site of your choice. Used to be called Qassia. Note: Starting from 14th March 2009, Qondio charges users a one time fee of $5USD to sign up an account. Gzyn Site that lets writers place their work there and generate revenue using Google Adsense. Takes a 10% cut from your profits. Xomba Xomba lets writers place their work there and generate revenue from Google Adsense. Adsense profits are split 50/50 between the site and writers. That doesn't sound very attractive, but Xomba makes up for that with frequent contests where writers stand to win cash prizes. In addition, Xomba articles can also be used to generate backlinks to your other blog/site/other articles. Print N Post Another "place Google Adsense on your articles there and earn" site. Community-wise, the site doesn't appear to be very large and Print N Post has a dismal Page Rank of 3. However, linking is allowed in your articles, and links are quality links, which makes it useful as a site to write excerpts linking to your main articles published elsewhere. Feed The Village This revenue sharing site doesn't pay out based on page views an article has generated. Instead, this site pays

I want to get a job one day writing funny commercials or writing for a funny show

I want to get a job one day writing funny commercials or writing for a funny show?
I'm a funny guy, not to mention modest. My creative juices are always flowing and I'm always thinking up crazy stories/scenarios/sketches... My dream job would be just brainstorming funny commercial ideas, obviously one day being able to produce/write my own movie would be spectacular. I've thought of doing some stand up at the local improv's open mic nites, and many of my friends are encouraging me to. But what about from an educational stand point? Any majors that would help me? I'm still in school and I don't want to chase some pipe dream of living my life from freelancing, I'd like to go to school for something steady, so if that major can be transferable to a lot of good jobs, I'm for it! advice?

That is so funny, I was thinking the same thing. The commercials out there now are so stupid. I know I could make so much money with a way better scenario. And I am SOOOOO sick of those drug commercials. Do yo hear all the side effects? You are better off suffering with the origional issue.

Well there is this in Britain. You could always try a major college system and utilize the Entire Drama Department and try to pick a specialty from there. Good Luck

How to start a freelance consultants

How to start a freelance consultants?
I want to goodbye my job and want to start consulting as a freelancer but I didn't know about consulting.Plz answer me for how to start consulting as a freelancer.

There has been an increase in the number of people wanting to become consultants recently. It is really important to understand what it would take some effort to stand out amongst all of them and make your voice/name heard. Having a personal website that talks about your freelancing work will help in marketing your business better. Here is a good article that talks about successful business consulting strategies.
2 :
First, you need to know what consulting is all about. " When someone hires you for consulting work, they are hiring you to provide expert advice that will help them solve a problem. A consulting gig lasts as long as it takes to get a proposal from you, that will include the advice and information the client needs to overcome the problems that stand between them and success. However, The contract you sign with a client or employer will have milestones and deadlines so that you don't take all the time you want. " ( see more explanation on the link below ). You can start as an independent consultant or form your team on many freelancing sites out there that lets you sign up for free. But first, you need to define your personal brand and learn the art of branding yourself

Are there any free websites that offer work for Freelance Writers

Are there any free websites that offer work for Freelance Writers?
I'm a writer looking for a little extra work. I've been surfing, but only seem to find sites that want to charge a fee. I can't justify paying $30 a month to apply for a job that only pays peanuts and w/ no guarantee that I'll get it. I can write editorials, short stories, poetry and the such.

Yahoo or google!
2 :
Your best bet would be to sign onto an agency. Your agent can then look at your personal strengths and weaknesses and use those to your advantage. Check out the Writer's Digest for magazines (I don't know the exact name, but look up Writer's Digest and you'll see about six of them.) Straight up Websites that do that for free are going to be incredibly rare and will only pay a minor price tag ($5 a pop or something inconsiderate like that.) You may also want to look into attending a few writer's conferences. Go with a load of business cards and have at it. The Complete Idiot's Guide to Getting Published has a great list for the larger conferences. I hope this helps.

Some freelance jobs can be done online. Hope these job websites can help you. http://www.usejob.com http://hotjobs.yahoo.com http://careers.msn.com http://www.craigslist.org

Do you need a license to work as a makeup artist in Florida

Do you need a license to work as a makeup artist in Florida?
I've heard that you can get fined if you are caught doing freelance makeup work without a license. I don't want to work for anyone, but simply do makeup as a freelance job for special occasions on my own. Can anyone clear this up, please? =)

I did a little searching and couldn't really find anything except that you have to be licensed unless you're selling it, like Avon, MaryKay, or even cosmetic counters. But I also read that many places like that require you to have a license. But even if you don't need a license to do freelance work, I would suggest getting it anyway, because its more appealing to people. (Think about it, being able to say you're truthfully 'licensed' rather then just a random person trying to make some money doing peoples makeup...it just sounds more professional) And that way, you'll always have your license just incase. You can email someone on your state board of cosmetology and ask as well, heres the site for florida http://www.myflorida.com/dbpr/pro/cosmo/index.html Hope this helps... I've been looking into stuff like this myself, so it give me some extra info. too.
2 :
No license needed

How can I payoff a $90,000 student loan, with a $33,000 per year income

How can I payoff a $90,000 student loan, with a $33,000 per year income?
The income contingent payment plan is too high for the amount of expenses I have and interest rates are compound daily. How can I freeze my interest? I need a freelance job immediately to help payoff this loan.
Financial Aid - 12 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
Question is why did you become so in debt? I'd sign up for some budgeting classes!
2 :
If i borrowed $90,000 on student loan I better have a MBA and an awesome job now. I still have a $5,000 student loan that has taken me forever to bring down.
3 :
have you consolidated? Put the payments on the longest repayment you can...like 25 years...then the payments should be lower...then, once you pay down your other debt, start paying more towards your student loans. If you've already done all that...I have no idea what you should do.
4 :
You need to look at refinancing this debt. Check your options to see if there is a better rate/payment plan. Otherwise get a 2nd job and use that income to supplement your payments until you can refinance it. Why do you have so much in a student loan?
5 :
Only have the absolute minimum to survive. Does bankruptcy handle it, you might want to check on that also. Either way your credit is gonna stink if you don't do something.
6 :
Simple go bankrupt! screw them all. at least ull still be getting ur sallery! thats how u get these Effing loan companies!!! they intrest everything to the extreme! u can save ur intrest, by claiming banck ruptcy!!! lol
7 :
Get married. Have your spouse work and use the spouse's income to make your loan payment. Otherwise, get a better paying job or sue your schools for misrepresentation. You could also try getting fired and then seek a hardship deferment. Then, collect the unemployment insurance to pay down your student loans.
8 :
Yikes, that's more in debt than both me and my husband were ever in with over 10 years of marriage... I haven't been in school in many years, so I don't know how expensive it is... I can't imagine borrowing more than I can pay back or why they let you do that... I do not think student loans are covered on bankruptcy, since we just went through that because I lost my job due to disability... I think if you are well enough to work, you are supposed to be well enough to pay back a loan... All I can say is offer to pay them what you can actually afford each month even if it isn't what they requested, and try to make them see you can't do it very soon... At least if they take you to court, you can prove you were trying to pay them and they were the ones who didn't accept it... That makes you look good...
9 :
refinance first, you can lock in a low rate..... My daughter is in a similar boat, she owes 80 thousand and has moved home to help save money and doesn't have any credit cards , (she did get a job for 44 thousand.) But it is still tough. Best of luck to you!!!
10 :
from a company that can cut your payment in half .
11 :
I would try paying it off slowly, I would not suggest filing bankruptcy..it is a government loan, not a bank loan or car loan...it will always be there until you pay it off...trust me I have been paying on mine for almost 10 years now!
12 :
Yikes!!! How did you ever get so far in debt!!!!! Whatever you do, don't declare bankruptcy -- you will not be able to wiggle out of this loan. Federally insured student loans are not removed by bankruptcy. You need to talk to a financial counselor right away. You borrowed the money and now you have to pay it off. The interest should be $600 or $700 a month, so with $33000 income you should be able to handle that. And then you will have to pay down the principal as best you can. But it is definitely going to take a long time.... :( I hope you are warning all your friends and relations not to get into such a horrible situation.
13 :
First off, based on how much debt you have already you should have a relatively high degree- at least a masters. In that case, I would suggest finding a better job; if the area you live in has a crappy job market, move. If the feild you chose just doesn't pay well....well, you kinda should have planned that part ahead of time. You might need to take up a second job. Do NOT file bankruptcy, because that just screws up your credit and it won't get rid of government loans. I would try refinancing in some way or another and really try to get the lowest interest rate you can, cause that will absolutely be the death of you. Also, if you can't find another job you might try contacting your school to see how they can help find you placement somewhere better. Since you said you need a freelance job asap, I'm assuming you're in some kind of journalism/writing field. Check out www.writermag.com and similar websites, they often have listenings for people looking for one time articles, etc and in many different topic areas

Any good paying freelance writing jobs

Any good paying freelance writing jobs?
I'm creating 2 websites but I don't have much time right now to finish them, so I was wondering if I can find any good paying freelance writing job for now, when my websites are finished i won't need to write anymore but just for now because I'm too busy, helium does not pay too much, so I would like to know if I can find any website that pays at least 1 $ per article, I don't need to make money, I'm not in a hurry but I want to have some money in my paypal in order to sell books on ebay, because I'm in lebanon, I'm not allowed to send money from my bank account to paypal directly. Any suggestions?

Since there are hundreds of experienced, professional freelance writers out there, I'm sure they will be first choice for any such jobs.
2 :
Magazines and newspapers by far pay the most. Usually over a $100 per essay or article. Nonetheless there are sites which you could try. Good luck.
3 :
It is extremely tough to make a living as a freelance writer. If you have lots of experience, you might get lucky, but outlets are cutting back on expenses. Some connections really help. And if you can find a place that pays $1 a word, let me know and we'll both write for it

Has anyone here earned decent money doing freelance work

Has anyone here earned decent money doing freelance work?
I want to quit my 9-5 job for the freedoms of being a freelancer. I wonder if it's worth the switch and if anyone has made it through, where they earn enough to pay their monthly bills. Thanks.
Other - Careers & Employment - 2 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
I have made a fair amount of money, but nothing to live on. I've kept my 9-5 and done freelance on the side. It IS quite possible to be a successful freelancer (if there's a demand for your type of work) but there is a key component here, and that is..... You must be VERY organized and seeking out knew customers a LOT! It's really difficult, and freelance work isn't reliable in itself. But if you want it and you have a 6+ month emergency fund, go for it!
2 :
I have worked in freelance for a long time and to be honest, it really depends on your position. Are you doing web design, Customer Service, Copyrighting, writing articles, etc? It also depends really for who you work for and how long. I remember that I had gotten a good offer to make a book for $1K USD, but I didn't have enough time to do it so, I just declined the offer. Dumb I know, but I had school and yeah that's more important. So, again it truly depends on what type of freelance work you're doing. Sometimes you may even see a good offer while at other times you may see a bad offer. I wouldn't recommend quitting your job as freelance is on-demand basis and there won't always be offers available to pay the bills. If you want to make a living than maybe you should think about selling some of your work over the net like web designs or services that you can offer to companies and individuals, but be warned, there's no guarantee that you'll make a living from this it's a huge chance and you can do this at your own risk. I hope this helps you out

What kind of jobs can a writer get besides writing fiction, pays decent and has job security

What kind of jobs can a writer get besides writing fiction, pays decent and has job security?
and is not freelance? Besides newspaper articles. I am also under the impression breaking into this field is difficult. Am I wrong?

Duh?

3 :
Well, I'm a published author & have a contract with a publishing company. 1. You could get an agent & publish a book. 2. Write newspaper/mag articles.
4 :
Working for a publisher. Tech writing for a corporation. Journalism. ---- They're, Their, There - Three Different Words. Careful or you may wind up in my next novel. Pax - C
5 :
music poetry my favorite
6 :
get a solid job as a journalist at a newspaper or a magazine, possibly an editor for a publishing company or possibly a screenwriter for television or the movies
7 :
Lots of big companies hire technical writers to write documentation for their products, software, etc. or to write employee manuals. You could also be a staff writer for a newspaper or other publication.
8 :
Technical writing, medical writing - but that seems dull.
9 :
Substitute "writer" for "hooker" and "writing fiction" for "having sex" and I think you'll have my answer. Don't quit though, if it's you passion. peace
10 :
You could work for a publisher (books, magazines, news). If not writing your own material, you might edit or re-write. There are many writing tasks in media, advertising, film, etc.
11 :
Work for an Advertising agency. It's hard to be a writer. It's a terrible profession, as you're likely to spend years toiling, living from paycheck to paycheck and never being a major success. If you can be something else, I recommend it. But if you BURN with the desire to write, then there's no other career that works for you, even if it is hard to make a living at it.
12 :
Make a website or portfolio choosing products and writing captions or descriptions. It's called Ad Copy. Send with a cover letter to ad copy sites, or hit the sidewalk with that portfolio, taking it to managers of stores that carry such products. You'd be signed, under contract, and responsible for blurbs or descriptions. I don't know how hard it is to break into this field.
13 :
all secure writing jobs are hard to break into. the only choice for someone who wants to make a living writing is freelance. i'd recommend you look for a secure job with benefits that is a little bit boring: admin, receptionist, etc. a job that doesn't suck your energy dry and where there's less work than time. maybe you can get some writing done at your desk, but you'll mostly have to write on the side.
14 :
I'd recommend getting some stuff published. It means you'd have to freelance a bit, but if you've been published it's much easier to get a steady job with a protfolio. Find magazines (or any publication, really) and start sending queries. I know a guy who writes about fiber optics! You can get a job writing about pretty much anything, so find something you know about and write! But say you did get a steady job with a regular paycheck and benefits and no worries at all - what would you write about ;-) It is impossibly hard to get a job editing at a publishing house or writing at a newspaper/magazine. It isn't nearly as easy as "go get a job" doing those things. All you can hope for is getting a foot in the door

Can I claim my internet and/or electricity as tax expenses as a freelance writer

Can I claim my internet and/or electricity as tax expenses as a freelance writer?
I work from home reviewing computer-based video games for a living, and the articles are published online. I spend maybe 6 hours a day working on articles, so it goes without saying that without internet (or electricity) I could not do my job. Can I claim these things as expenses? And would I have to file form 8829 if I did, or could I just add them to my Schedule C?
United States - 4 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
Of course they are how you make your living. Without them you could not earn an income.
2 :
Electricity is very minimal. Maybe 5 cents a day. To write that off, you need records showing how much is used. If you use your Internet connection for anything OTHER than strictly business, you cannot write anything off.
3 :
For a home office, all off your home expenses are tax-deductible based on the business percentage of your home. That includes your mortgage payment, utilities, insurance, real estate taxes, garbage, water, etc. To figure out the percentage of your home that’s used for business, divide the square footage of the area used for business by the square footage of your entire home. For example, if your home office is 12 feet by 12 feet, that’s 144 square feet. If your entire home is 1,400 square feet, then diving 144 by 1,400 gives you a home office space that’s 10% of your home. Therefore 10% of the qualifying expenses of your home can be attributed to business use and the remaining 90% are personal use. So if your monthly power bill is $200 and 10% of your home qualifies for business use, you can consider $20 of the bill a business expense and the remaining $180 a personal expense. For more details see IRS Publication 587, titled Business Use of Your Home. If you’re self-employed you must generally report expenses for business use of your home on IRS Form 8829. Here's more information: http://moneygirl.quickanddirtytips.com/home-office-deductions.aspx
4 :
Do you have a separate space that you work from that you NEVER use for anything personal? If not, then no to the electricity. Do you ever use your internet connection for non work stuff? If yes, then you cannot claim the internet as an expense. Claim anything like this and you can expect to be audited because so many people, like you, push the envelope into tax evasion.

Well of course you need the design programs to begin with. Alot of it depends on where you are located and what your skill level is. Check out some of the direct mail companies in your area. Alot of them hire freelance production artists. You won't get rich with them, but you can make a decent living. Working at home freelance style takes alot of discipline though.
2 :
try looking on craigslist for freelance gigs. be sure you're well-versed in adobe photoshop and illustrator. a big plus if you know HTML/CSS and layout design for websites. and also, having a good grasp of typography will come in handy, so make sure you know your Helveticas and Garamonds.

How can I find freelance work in Holland?
I want a work-from-home job in the Netherlands--writing, editing or proofreading. Where can I find access to these jobs without having to pay a website?

Try these, not sure if you can work from home, but at least it's a start! (Next time try to post your question in a more suitable section; London is not the place to look for a job in NL!) Good luck with your search! http://www.expatica.com/source/jobs_show_item.asp?subchannel_id=169&item_id=6245&country=Netherlands&type_of_job=Media http://www.englishlanguagejobs.com

How much should I charge for freelance photography

How much should I charge for freelance photography?
I have been asked to take a few pictures for a company and I am just starting out. It is about a 3 hour job and they will pay for my dinner since it is a night shoot and want the pictures to look non-professional, more candid.

$350 plus usage would be a minimum. I bill at $700 plus usage, but that has to do with the PR or media budget and clients past experience with my work. Being given dinner does not decrease your fee. It is what is called "expenses" always added to your invoice if not paid in advance. Candid does NOT mean non-professional. It only means non-posed, you work always should be professional.
2 :
I agree with fotoace. Dinner is a courtesy, not payment. If they are hiring a shooter, they DO want professional images and candid vs:formal has nothing to do with professional vs: non professional. If they wanted them to look non professional, they would be taking shots with their camera phones instead. The amount you should charge depends on your level of expertise. If you are just starting out, I am assuming you are either in school or just got out? If so, ask one of your professors what the market will bear for someone who has some skill but not much seasoning. If you have no formal training, I would recommend getting some, before charging for your services

How can I get a job in the advertising agency

How can I get a job in the advertising agency?
I graduated with a different degree than the career I'm pursuing. I've gone through several interviews with agencies but cannot seem to get a the full-time offer. I've gotten freelancing opportunities but I really want to be a in-house Graphic Designer for an agency because I prefer job security.

so your a telemarketer and SPAM kinda guy? ughh
2 :
You've gotta pay your dues. Start out in an entry-level job and work your way up. Or continue freelancing and let it be known that you want a full time position. I started out as a clerical worker when I wanted to be a copy writer or an ad buyer. In not too much time, I ended up a traffic manager and wrote copy, too.
3 :
THIS is a question I can answer, as it's my field. Get your book (portfolio) together, with at least 4-5 solid campaigns (that are beautifully designed and well thought-out.) Use those freelance gigs to get connections, make friends, start networking, get your face out there and your portfolio in people's hands. Don't stick to traditional print media, do full campaigns with non-traditional placement and interactive capabilities. Your freelance can eventually turn into a real job, either at that agency or another one where you have found a connection. There are also portfolio schools you can attend if you need help.
4 :
Look, no one can make a dancer, a musician or advertising people! They are born that way! Some think you can learn but there are always thinks which are, Lat's say question of talent. You have it or you don't. End of question. You have to take a look in totally different direction and branch. Don't you think?
5 :
Try to find somebody who knows somebody, that can put a good word-in for you

Home based full time WEB DESIGNER job NEEDED....PLZ HELP

Home based full time WEB DESIGNER job NEEDED....PLZ HELP..?
I m based in India. I want to do a home based web designer job (full time) NOTE - home based means working online. NOTE - Please don't confuse with freelance job...I don't want to be a freelancer...I want to work on a daily basis like an employee does but i want to do it online from my home. Where an i find such emmployers? Is there any site where such employers search for people like me?

Please be very cautious about trusting anyone from a message board or chatroom albeit there are some really helpful people here :) A lot of home-based 'jobs' are a scam especially if asking for money upfront. Perhaps if there's a bricks and mortar (as opposed to a p.o./post office box office "address") business and there is hard evidence (as opposed to an ad) that they are looking for an employee to work from home, that may be an option. However, there is a lot of risk with identity theft and divulging personal information so please make sure that any job signing on for is a well-established facility and perhaps check with the "better business bureau" (though that's not a guarantee either). Just to reiterate to be extremely cautious with this endeavor and only deal with a company that's been in business for awhile if embarking on this kind of work at all.
2 :
Try Craigslist

What are the realistice job opportunities for an adobe illustrator artist

What are the realistice job opportunities for an adobe illustrator artist?
Can anyone provide some insight to freelance artists doing logos, graphic designs, screen printing etc. Do you bill the clients by the project? By the hour? What is a fair market value rate, assuming the work is very good?

The AIGA (American Institute of Graphic artists) publishes an annual pricing guide. Look it over at your local bookstore over a cup of coffee, look locally at what people are willing to pay for comparable work, and the MOST IMPORTANTLY figure out what you need to live on - then come up with your price. And never cut your own throat to get a job. Walking away from lousy clients and lousy jobs is a survival skill you won't often find mentioned.

You will get paid for answering questions on topics of your expertise. You will be paid almost immediately after the call ends via paypal. You had paid to go to school why not get paid for the knowledge you have gained? http://beta.bitwine.com/signup/SP

How can I get into freelance writing for the science field

How can I get into freelance writing for the science field?
Any particular level of college degree? (My highest level is an associates...so far). I've had lots of heavy writing classes, along with science & technology classes. But since I'm at the associates degree level, I'm wondering if maybe it's possible I could find some kind of junior level science writer type of job with a magazine, etc.

Well, you have a very low degree for this field choice. It is not impossible. Your best shot is to try to get into goverment work and work your way up from there. Try the NSF. Go to their website and apply online. http://www.nsf.gov/
2 :
The best routes to take are to research the process of starting a business as well as the industry you're interested in. Associations may be a good avenue to explore as well. These organizations will address many of the thoughts, questions and concerns you'll inevitably have as well as many you haven't anticipated yet. See the source box for some relevant links. Research, research, research – this cannot be stressed enough. Read as much as you can about the industry. Can I still collect unemployment even if I accept a freelance position to help pay my bills

Can I still collect unemployment even if I accept a freelance position to help pay my bills?
I live in California and I just got laid off. As we all know, California is expensive. I am about to collect unemployment but someone is offering me a temporary job? Will I still be able to collect the unemployment?
Personal Finance - 2 Answers

1 :
Legally and morally I would say no. Unemployment means it is money to help fill the gap till you land a job. Temporary is still a job. If it is too expensive to live there consider moving
2 :
FYI: When you fill out the continued claim form it asks you "Did you work or earn any money whether you were paid or not", the claim form is a legal document. If it is found that you worked and earned money you will be subject to pay back the money you were over paid and will also be stuck with penalty weeks you have to serve before you will be able to get paid. If you work freelance, just make sure you report that you worked. You may have to go thru an interview and they will deduct a portion of what you earned from your weekly benefit amount. EXAMPLE: if your wba is 200 and you earn 100 working freelance they will deduct 75 from the wba leaving you with 125 paid on your wba. So for that week you would be making 225 from both your freelance work and u.i. benefits

Can a college kid freelance write with no fees

Can a college kid freelance write with no fees?
I'm a college kid with no job, and a quickly dwindling bank account (no job because I go to school 19 credit hours. I don't have time for a traditional job). Just about the only marketable skill I have, aside from my devilishly handsome good looks, is my writing. I'm just looking for something to do to get money for Christmas this year, hopefully a company or organization that doesn't require some huge start-up fee. Can somebody point me in the right direction?

You could try submitting copies of your work like a sample article to magazines and newspapers, being careful to use the style of writing and subjects that they favor. I know a teenager who once got paid for short stories! Best to mail a lot of different publications in one go, so that you increase your chances of getting a response or even just tips on how to improve your writing.
2 :
Try this site: http://easyurl.net/1c0 it can make you good money and it is easy to do. There are no fees and it pays out every Friday. It is one of the few work at home websites that has made me good money consistently. It makes me $1200-$1500 a month. Or try one of these other good work from home websites on this site: http://easyurl.net/c1f
3 :
no guarantees you would sell anything in time to get paid for this Xmas (or next even). If it was that easy, everyone would be a writer

What is an appropriate pay rate per hour if I am doing freelance research for a woman that is writing a book

What is an appropriate pay rate per hour if I am doing freelance research for a woman that is writing a book?
I met a woman through my current job(which has nothing to do with research) and we started talking about books. We have similar interests and I mentioned I love reading up on certain topics. She offered me a side job doing research for her and asked me to give her an hourly rate. (I currently manage a cosmetic counter, but I'm in school and this could build my resume)

Working Freelance jobs on the web

Working Freelance jobs on the web?
I'm very interested in working as a freelancer for site like guru.com or elance.com. What is a good way to compete with so many people? I'm very good at designing and building websites but would I need to setup a portfolio for my self to be competitive? Are there any other suggestions? Thanks
Technology - 2 Answers

I use guru.com and have found it's works great. What you need to do is to build your portfolio along with your resume and other items that "sell" you above others. You'll need text descriptions as well - e-commerce sites, informative sites, service selling sites. Get a list of what they call solutions - websites you've built, others you've assisted building, what languages you understand, etc...... Keep it compiled for any potential employer to preview when you bid on jobs.
2 :
If you want to make money online and wanted to work from home, go for freelancing jobs. They are only one, that will pay you and its free to become a freelancer. The Internet has opened up many freelance opportunities, expanding markets and helping to build it into one of the largest economic segments for many economies. You dont need to pay to get the job. Development for freelancing has been especially high for software development, website design, information technology, and business documentation. Freelance practice varies greatly. Some require clients to sign written contracts<!--while others may perform work based on verbal agreements, perhaps enforceable through the very nature of the work. Some freelancers may provide written estimates of work and request deposits from clients. Get more information on the website. You can almost find any freelance job you want. http://freelancejobs.awardspace.com/ Payment for freelance work also varies greatly. Freelancers may charge by the day or hour, or on a per-project basis. Instead of a flat rate or fee, some consultants have adopted a value-based pricing method-->based on the perceived value of the results to the client. By custom, payment arrangements may be upfront, percentage upfront, or upon completion. For more complex projects, a contract may set a payment schedule based on milestones or outcomes

The Practicality/Logistics of taking on Freelance positions while on Unemployment

The Practicality/Logistics of taking on Freelance positions while on Unemployment?
Has anyone taken on a freelance project, week or month-long, while getting unemployment? Do you: 1.) On my State's (wa) claim website, do I click the "I worked freelance this week" radio button while making my online weekly claim or 2.) Do I just simply not do my weekly claim for the weeks I worked? And final question: The unemployment money that you didn't receive in lieu of doing freelance work - do you get this money back to you anyway? The U.I. statement I just got from the State says I've been approved for no more than something like: $9,012 over some months. And I might need that full amount, if, even earning the freelance money, my unemployment still drags on after that. The thing is: The freelance jobs I'd be working *won't* turn into a full time job. So if I'm not going to be recouped the U.I. checks that I'm "losing" during the freelance work week, I'd rather not freelance at all, and use that time instead to job-search. And, I would also rather use that freelancing time to learn new programming languages for better full-time job marketability! Thanks, Steve It's possible to misunderstand 2.) if you don't read carefully. When I say, "don't file a weekly claim", that means, "don't try to get money from the state, because I've worked freelance".
Other - Careers & Employment - 2 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
Answer number 2. The unemployment $$ that you did not claim will be available at the end of your unemployment claim. Whether you freelance or not is your decision. If you do not claim $$ in that week, it doesn't matter to UI what you are doing. Remember that your benefit claim year is different than the regular year. So always file another claim when your first one runs out. You may have worked enough time in the required quarters (or earned enough money) to be able to open a new claim for another benefit year.
2 :
Hmmmmm Sounds like you want to go to jail. Well, I meant prison since you will be convicted of theft and fraud. And that is what will happen if you are caught not claiming you work. Unemployed means no job-----freelance is a job, so you are not unemployed. You may be underemployed, but not unemployed. It depends on your state laws on whether you can claim for the difference between work and unemployment. Best Answer is go to UPS and try to get a job. The shifts are 4 hours long, they pay for medical, 401K and tuition reimbursement. This is the time of the year to do it. You could almost work around the clock. Again- do yourself a favor, stay out of prison

Can a freelance storyboard artist make a good living

Can a freelance storyboard artist make a good living?
How much money does the average storyboard artist make annually? I know most storyboard artists work on a contract basis with film directors and/or DP's on a per film basis, but is the work steady or should one not quit their daytime job?
Drawing & Illustration - 1 Answers

You posted this question 3 times! You're absolutely right! Don't quite your day job! Median annual wages of salaried multimedia artists and animators were $56,330. The middle 50 percent earned between $41,710 and $77,010. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $31,570, and the highest 10 percent earned more than $100,390. Median annual wages were $65,600 in motion picture and video industries, and $52,530 in advertising and related services. Earnings for self-employed artists vary widely. Some charge only a nominal fee while they gain experience and build a reputation for their work. Others, such as well-established freelance fine artists and illustrators, can earn more than salaried artists. Many, however, find it difficult to rely solely on income earned from selling paintings or other works of art. Like other self-employed workers, freelance artists must provide their own benefits. Demand for multimedia artists and animators will increase as consumers continue to demand more realistic video games, movie and television special effects, and 3D animated movies. Employment of Multi-media artists and animators is expected to grow 14 percent through 2018, about as fast as the average for all occupations
