Can anyone provide some insight to freelance artists doing logos, graphic designs, screen printing etc. Do you bill the clients by the project? By the hour? What is a fair market value rate, assuming the work is very good?

The AIGA (American Institute of Graphic artists) publishes an annual pricing guide. Look it over at your local bookstore over a cup of coffee, look locally at what people are willing to pay for comparable work, and the MOST IMPORTANTLY figure out what you need to live on - then come up with your price. And never cut your own throat to get a job. Walking away from lousy clients and lousy jobs is a survival skill you won't often find mentioned.
