What kind of jobs can a writer get besides writing fiction, pays decent and has job security



What kind of jobs can a writer get besides writing fiction, pays decent and has job security?
and is not freelance? Besides newspaper articles. I am also under the impression breaking into this field is difficult. Am I wrong?

Well, I'm a published author & have a contract with a publishing company. 1. You could get an agent & publish a book. 2. Write newspaper/mag articles.

get a solid job as a journalist at a newspaper or a magazine, possibly an editor for a publishing company or possibly a screenwriter for television or the movies

Lots of big companies hire technical writers to write documentation for their products, software, etc. or to write employee manuals. You could also be a staff writer for a newspaper or other publication.

You could work for a publisher (books, magazines, news). If not writing your own material, you might edit or re-write. There are many writing tasks in media, advertising, film, etc.

Work for an Advertising agency. It's hard to be a writer. It's a terrible profession, as you're likely to spend years toiling, living from paycheck to paycheck and never being a major success. If you can be something else, I recommend it. But if you BURN with the desire to write, then there's no other career that works for you, even if it is hard to make a living at it.

Make a website or portfolio choosing products and writing captions or descriptions. It's called Ad Copy. Send with a cover letter to ad copy sites, or hit the sidewalk with that portfolio, taking it to managers of stores that carry such products. You'd be signed, under contract, and responsible for blurbs or descriptions. I don't know how hard it is to break into this field.

all secure writing jobs are hard to break into. the only choice for someone who wants to make a living writing is freelance. i'd recommend you look for a secure job with benefits that is a little bit boring: admin, receptionist, etc. a job that doesn't suck your energy dry and where there's less work than time. maybe you can get some writing done at your desk, but you'll mostly have to write on the side.

I'd recommend getting some stuff published. It means you'd have to freelance a bit, but if you've been published it's much easier to get a steady job with a protfolio. Find magazines (or any publication, really) and start sending queries. I know a guy who writes about fiber optics! You can get a job writing about pretty much anything, so find something you know about and write! But say you did get a steady job with a regular paycheck and benefits and no worries at all - what would you write about ;-) It is impossibly hard to get a job editing at a publishing house or writing at a newspaper/magazine. It isn't nearly as easy as "go get a job" doing those things. All you can hope for is getting a foot in the door
