Freelance Graphic Designer

Freelance Graphic Designer?
Hi any tips on becoming a Freelance Graphic Designer? How do you go about it? I am considering becoming a Freelance Graphic Designer as the Graphic Design Job i am in now, isn't as enjoyable as it used to be, and my partner and i are planning to have a baby soon, so i would love to work from home. Any help please.

Depending on what state you're in, you can get a business liscense for $20. Get your portfolio online on a website. Get business cards printed, hand them out and tell everyone you know about what you're doing. Hit Craigslist and sign up on the 'get a freelancer' sites (type in "Graphic designer" and the name of your town into Google. Get your name on the first pages that come up. Figure out how much to charge per hour, or quote a flat rate. There will be some trial and error, don't try to compete on price(you'll starve eating crumbs), but you CAN compete on service. Look around and see what people are charging and what customers get out of it. It helps to get on good terms with a reliable printer(NOT Kinkos). They'll be happy to work with you, and can give you tips on what will get an accurate representation of your designs. That and if they don;t have a designer in-house, they could just be shooting business your way. Also, the less time clients have to spend on printing and such, the happier they'll be.

If you don't already get your photographs from micro stock photo sites for your designs. You may want to consider doing so as it is a huge cost savings over the traditional stock agencies. You may also find the forums useful on these sites. To get started visit this page: http://www.smilelikeumeanit.com/stock.html
