I'm a freelance videographer. if I get paid 1700$, how much of that goes for tax in state of California?

Depends on your total income for the year. At least a little over 14%, for self employment tax. Could be a lot more than that if you have other income for the year.

The Self Employment tax is 15.3% in the United States. Also, you may have to pay income tax on the earnings if you have additional income, however your expenses should be enough to offset your income on $1700, and to find that out you'll have to file a Schedule C. If you have no profit after the Schedule C is complete, there is no tax liability
