Well, if by "freelancing" you mean working for yourself as an independent 1099 contractor rather than as a W-2 employee, then you can make quite a bit. The IT and Web development guys who work with me are pretty much all independent contractors, and they make around $60 to $75 an hour. Of course, they have to pay self-employment taxes and all their own Social Security and Medicare and health insurance premiums out of that, so it's probably not quite as good as it sounds, but they still do OK. I guess the short answer is, it depends on what kind of work you're talking about doing

I am thinking of quitting my job in radio sales to start a modeling and publicity agency from my home.

I am thinking of quitting my job in radio sales to start a modeling and publicity agency from my home.?
I thinks its time to start my owne business. I have a BA in communication and experience working at previous modeling agency. I am a thesis away from completing a MA in adult ed. I live in Atlanta where there are several others pursuing this same interests. I have a saved a years worth of living expenses to make this happen, but people say that Im crazy for quitting my job selling AM radio, of which I no longer have interests. I am also wondering if I should invest in office space to have a more professional environment for clients and models? Should I leap out on faith with no designated incoming coming in or signed contracts? It's not like i'm making a heck of alot in radio sales, but I am skilled in writing proposals and convincing clients to buy my products. I've purched every help book I can think of in the areas of freelancing, pr, consulting, event planning, marketing, etc.

WOW. That's a hard one. Do you have any models to "sell"? You have to have 'products'. Who/what are you going to 'sell'?? You have to have a portfolio of work for potential clients. Are you a photographer, and if not-do you know one who will do portfolios for your models if they don't have one? A model without their "book" is like an eagle without 'wings'. Publicity agent....is just that. Get a body of work together, and then go forward. Also-you are in radio sales...use this as a stepping stone for your business. Make friends witht the right people. I would call a Publicity Agent in your area and ask for a job-then you can learn the business inside/out. It is not an easy business. *Or call an agency in NY, or Atlanta...find some #'s on the internet before you take such a leap. *Working for an agency is the best bet....if you think you're good enough to start your own company-try your wings at an established agcy first>see how you do then consider taking that plunge.

I think you shouldn't listen to the naysayers who say you can't do this and go with your gut. You have obviously done your homework, thought this out thoroughly, saved a year's worth of money to provide for your living expenses. If this is what you want to do, I think you should go for it. If you are unhappy in your present job and this is what you want, then you should see if you can make it happen. Just one word of caution: I had over a years' worth of money saved up in my bank account and I quit a job to get a handle on my stress and take care of myself after the deaths of my father, brother and then mother, all while going through a difficult divorce. The money went very quickly because there will always be something unexpected that wasn't planned for. I am fine, but I will tell you it can be pretty nerve-wracking when you see the money begin to dwindle if you don't start seeing the fruits of your labor start to come in after a while. As long as you plan for the unexpected, you should be fine. You should also set a reasonable timetable for how long you are willing to give your dream a chance before deciding if it will come to fruition or not. A final thought: Just make sure you don't burn bridges at your current job and make as many connections as you can with people. These connections can serve you well when you need to network with others in order to drum up business. Maybe someone you know or have worked with knows someone who is a loan officer and can give you a business loan. If you network well with others, as it sounds like you are able to do with your experience, you should be fine. I wish you all the best and I commend you for your courage to make your dream come true. Remember that people thought Bill Gates was a bit goofy until he founded Microsoft and became a mega-billionaire.

Prior of quitting your current job to focus on your own business, you should create a network that can help you promoting the service that you want to provide. Our website, http://www.GlobalJobsTrading.com , offers freelancers, contractors, self-employees, business or any other individuals a virtual place where they can meet, post and trade jobs, look for jobs, promote their business, services or skills worldwide. You can start by creating a profile on our website where you can describe the type of service you provide, display contact information, post link to your website, etc. By having an on-line profile you increase the chances to be found, contacted and, eventually, hired by somebody. Also, you can bid your own proposal on the current jobs that are open for bidding. By doing so, and by having a detailed profile, you increase the chances to be hired for that job. Before everything, you should have your own website to promote your service. Even if you have a detailed profile on our website, you can not be as detailed as having your own website. If you don’t have one already, you can use our website to post a job asking somebody to build a website for you. Professionals from around the world will see your job, and they will start bidding their proposals on it. The longer you keep the job open, the most likely you are to get better prices. In other words, they will start fighting to offer you the best price. You can review their proposals, check their profiles, visit their websites, and decide which one is the most qualified for your job so you can hire. Try our service now, it is FREE. You don’t have anything to lose. There are many other things that we can help you with in promoting your service. Please don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any questions. 18 year old high school senior freelance writing for a website

18 year old high school senior freelance writing for a website?
I'll get straight to the point. Basically, I have written for my high school newspaper for three years, and have received much praise for my articles. I have also been looking for a part time job to earn some extra money before I go off to college. I saw an ad on Facebook for this site called Suite101.com which pays people for articles (if they get published), and I thought that it would be a nice gig for me. The way I see it is why work at a place like Popeye's chicken when I can get paid writing about the things I love in the comfort of my own home? Does anyone have any info on these so called sites or any suggestions/advice about my consideration for pursuing a freelance writing job for this website at my age (since it seems like most freelance writers these days are older)?

I'm a professional copywriter and I can tell you flat out that writing from home is nowhere near as simple doing it in the "comfort of your [my] own home." I spend hours writing but then I also spend time worrying about being distracted, personal obligations, errands, etc. It's not easy. These sites that offer to pay are a joke. Any writer worth their salt will not only write for reputable sites, they will also not accept what these sites claim to offer. So many only offer $5-25 per article. That is an insult to professional writers who have earned their credibility and have the strong portfolio to allow them to command more. I earn $15 an hour off my work and although it isn't much, with the economy being what it is, I'm willing to charge cheaply. Build up a portfolio of your work and consider going to local newspapers and speaking to the editors. You may have a chance of getting freelance work reporting general beat stories or covering special events. It's not glamorous or wonderful, but it will get your foot in the door. Good luck!
2 :
Not sure about the website, but go to a bookstore and buy a few "writers magazines". Last time I checked, there are several freelance jobs listed in these magazine. Good Luck!!!

There is a growing glut of freelance CAD draftsmen. You need to advertise in the appropriate places and register your company/name with the various online "personal outsourcing" and job sites. Sometimes advertising in a paper or magazine helps. Make sure you have a portfolio ready to show prospective customers, demonstrating your experience and skill set

How to break into freelance writing

How to break into freelance writing?
I've been writing for several years and was wondering how to find jobs/get paid for writing? I don't know where to begin looking for/getting jobs since everywhere I have looked seems to want experience before they'll hire anyone. This seems like a catch 22, since the only way to get work experience is to get jobs , and the only way to get jobs is to have experience. Can anyone please give me some advice? Thanks also, can anyone tell me about pay pal/ getting paid provided I do get any jobs?

Try posting an ad on Craigslist.

For freelance writing, a most important 'experience' is the portfolio of your writing samples. Here's how you go about getting freelance work: 1. Create a portfolio of articles in your areas of expertise and interest. 2. Write a letter through e-mail to companies and or the editors of newspapers / magazines, expressing interest that you want to work as a freelance content writer and or to contribute articles to their publications. 3. Attach to the e-mail one or more of your best writing samples. If the company / editors like your writing, they will contact you. 4. Register for freelance writing work at sites like getafreelancer.com, guru.com, and elance.com 5. Create a website and put your best writing samples on it. 6. Submit free articles to sites like ezine.com. At the end of each article, include a bio and a link back to your website. Of all the types of freelance writing, freelance technical writing perhaps gives you the greatest income. Interested? Find more info at: http://tinyurl.com/techl-writing

Where can I find freelance proofreading jobs online (preferably work-at-home jobs

Where can I find freelance proofreading jobs online (preferably work-at-home jobs)?
I want to get into freelance proofreading (seeing as how it's one of the few things I seem to have a knack for) but I'm having a bit of trouble finding jobs in my community. I want to look online for freelance offers that don't require too much in the way of education (I'm still a sophomore in high school). However, most ask to see a resume of credentials, diplomas, etc. Is there anywhere I can look that will simply accept proofreaders without this? (I realize that if they do, they may not off pay. This is fine with me because I'd like to build a reputation in the freelance world before moving on up to companies or publishers that pay.)

Hi, Thanks for sharing the useful information. Online proofreaders are becoming a necessity, with the constant and consistent growth in the number of websites. Nothing turns a web visitor off more, or prompts loss of credibility points than misspelled words. Also one needs to be very careful when typing proofreading symbols

Anybody know of any good opportunities out there for beginning freelance writers?
I have the passion and the education. I work for a major consumer magazine, but in advertising. I'm just looking for ways to gain more clips/exposure/experience so I can work my way into the editorial field at my job. Thanks.

Good question. Actually a lot of Fortune 500 companies look publish newsletters for their clients and often don't have internal writers and will hire local freelance writers. You may want to contact your local bank, financial firm, insurance company and see if they need a writer for their client newsletter. Good luck!
2 :
Since you're already in the field, poke your head over that church-state wall and ask some of the writers and editors at your magazine for advice. Ask if they'll look over some samples and give you feedback. Maybe you can hire one to help you whip your copy into shape. They also probably get approached a lot with freelance assignments they can't take so you might be able to scoop up some work there.

Hang out in the forum at http://aboutfreelancewriting.com Great people. Lots of support. Lists of jobs. Can't beat it
